BayLegal seeks a Grants & Contracts Officer with a strong commitment to public interest and social justice advocacy to be a member of our Grants & Contracts team.  This position is based in our Oakland office.  This is a non-union position within BayLegal. 

As a member of BayLegal’s Grants & Contracts team, the Grants & Contracts Officer will:

  • Maintain a portfolio of grants and contracts, including federal, state, and local cost reimbursable grants, as well as foundation and corporate grants;
  • Help to develop new proposals –researching new funding prospects and working with program staff and collaborative partners to prepare and submit applications for new and renewal funding;
  • Monitor and assure grant and contract compliance, including working with program staff, collaborative partners and finance team to: monitor project deliverables and spending; develop and submit timely narrative reports and invoicing; process contracts; coordinate and attend site visits with funders; and meet any additional funder requirements;
  • Establish, build, and maintain good relationships with funder contacts;
  • Maintain grants and contracts tracking system, records, files, and databases (Salesforce);
  • Work closely with BayLegal's Finance Department to develop and modify grant budgets, ensure timely submission of invoices, monitor grant spending, and ensure timely and complete communication on all grant related issues;
  • Work closely with BayLegal's managing attorneys, regional counsel, supervising attorneys, and Development and Communications team members to promote BayLegal's mission and resource development;
  • Assist the Director of Grants & Contracts and Executive Director with projects related to the strategic development of institutional funding support; and
  • Engage in other tasks and projects that further BayLegal's mission and operations as a non-profit.
Requirements/Qualifications/About the Successful Candidate:
  • Bachelor's degree is required. Master's degree in non-profit management or related field is preferred;
  • Has a minimum of three (3) years of experience prospecting and evaluating grant opportunities, developing, and submitting grant applications, developing, and analyzing program budgets, managing a portfolio of grants, including government (federal, state and/or local) cost reimbursement grants or contracts and foundation grants, and/or managing direct services programs;
  • Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination by date of hire to be considered. Proof of vaccination required;
  • Cultural humility in working with colleagues and clients across the spectrum of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, immigrant status, religious identity, physical and mental disabilities, and/or limited English proficiency;
  • Experience and knowledge of issues facing individuals who are low-income, unhoused, impacted by the criminal legal system or other public systems and institutions, and/or violence;
  • Experience and high competency in using Microsoft Excel to develop, analyze and manage budgets;
  • Experience analyzing programmatic data and business processes;
  • Experienced using fundraising software and understands the value of a data-driven fundraising process;
  • Experience developing and leading projects, including defining scope of work, overseeing compliance, progress and tracking, meeting deadlines, evaluation, and reporting;
  • Experience with Salesforce is preferred;
  • Strong personal work ethic and ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet critical deadlines with minimal supervision;
  • Skilled in clear, concise, and effective communication with colleagues, funders, partners, and stakeholders, including in writing and meetings;
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proof-reading skills;
  • Strong analytical skills;
  • Detail oriented, thorough, and accurate;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively with a dynamic team;
  • Curious and self-directed with an ability to anticipate what needs to be done; and
  • Positive attitude, sense of humor and proactive problem-solver.

Employees are expected to reside in California and at a distance allowing them to commute to their physical BayLegal base location, and to other service delivery locations as needed, during the standard work week.

Compensationand Benefits: We offer a diverse, family friendly environment, and compensation based on competitive public interest salaries along with a generous benefits package. The estimated annual salary range is $88,000 - $106,000 (placement in range determined primarily by years of related experience).  BayLegal's benefits package includes 100% employer covered medical, dental, and life insurance for employees and up to 60% for dependents; BayLegal student debt reimbursement program; long term disability insurance; employee assistance program; dependent childcare employer contribution program; and 401k retirement plan with BayLegal contribution following first year.  BayLegal has a generous paid leave policy which includes sick leave; parental leave; 15 holidays each year; 3 floating holidays each year (days chosen by employee); and vacation (starting at 13 days and increasing with additional years of employment).
