Job Description:
The Office of Residence Life at the State University of New York at Fredonia seeks qualified candidates for the position of Graduate AssistantResidence Director with a start date of August 6, 2024. Graduate AssistantResidence Directors are 10-month, part-time staff members who are entrusted with the transformation of a mere physical structure of a residence hall into a vibrant community with safety, academic success, civility, and belonging at its forefront. Graduate AssistantResidence Directors supervise talented Resident Assistants, coordinate social and educational programming efforts and 1:1 student connectors, and work with our Department of Facilities Services to ensure that residence halls are properly cleaned and maintained. This position presents an excellent opportunity for those who are enrolled in graduate programs, whether in Student Affairs/Higher Education or in another field. The precise number of candidates who will be hired for the 2024 - 2025 school year is not yet know, though it is anticipated that 3 positions will be available.
Rewards and Benefits:

  • Full SUNY tuition waiver for between six (6) and nine (9) academic credits each semester/summer;

Position Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Associate Director of Residence Life, successful Graduate AssistantResidence Director candidates will:
  • Assume responsibility for the general oversight and administration of a residence hall, including but not limited to openings and closings, work orders, occupancy reports, damage assessments, and room change paperwork;
  • Fully participate in Residence Director and Resident Assistant training sessions, scheduled before the start of each semester in August 2024 and January 2025;
  • Supervise Resident Assistants, work study students, and Night Desk Attendants;
  • Advise a Residence Hall Council;
  • Collaborate with Resident Assistants, Hall Council leadership, and students to cultivate a community that prioritizes safety, academic success, civility, connection, and belonging;
  • Talk to students who are in crisis or distress, referring them to Counseling Services when appropriate;
  • Facilitate conduct reviews with students alleged to be in violation of college policy and determine educational sanctions for students who are deemed responsible for violations;
  • Mediate roommate conflicts as they arise;
  • Participate in an emergency on-call rotation during the weekends; and
  • Be aware of, understand, and follow all university policies.

Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree earned by May 31, 2024;
  • Enrollment in a graduate program at either Fredonia or another SUNY institution;
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and constituents in support of campus and department mission; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to the university, division, and profession.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous work experience in Residence Life or other Student Affairs functional areas;
  • Willingness to work collaboratively;
  • Demonstrated supervision skills, such as listening, motivating, goal-setting, and documenting;
  • Ability to attend to details and perform administrative tasks accurately and efficiently; and
  • Interest in and commitment to community engagement.

Additional Information:
This is a part-time, temporary position beginning August 6, 2024.
Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
