JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Golf Course Superintendent
Basic Function: The Golf Course Superintendent is entrusted with the development, operation, and management of the Golf Course. He/she is responsible for supervising the construction and management of the Golf Course and all related areas. They report to the Director of Grounds Operations and/or the General Manager. The superintendent has the ability to lead others and provides an environment of unity and teamwork. Other functions are to render professional advice, prepare/implement annual budgets, evaluating employees, and long-range planning.
Typical Responsibilities:
- Assumes responsibility for managing and maintaining Golf Course properties which may include: (a) Golf Course, (b) maintenance equipment, (c) golf cart fleet, (d) clubhouse grounds and landscaping, (e) wooded areas and open spaces, (f) practice facility and nursery, and (g) other properties as specified by the superintendent’s supervisor.
- Construction, renovation and/or reconstruction of such properties, whether performed by Golf Course management staff or outside contractors.
- Prepares the annual budgets for the management and capital improvement of the Golf Course and properties. The superintendent formulates the annual management and capital budgets so as to implement company policies established in accordance with the long-range plan and defined Golf Course management standards.
- Interviews, hire, trains, directs, and supervises a staff of employees for the purpose of managing the properties. The superintendent has authority to terminate employment of subordinates.
- Plans all Golf Course management and project work, applying his/her agronomic and administrative expertise to achieve the agreed-upon management standards and long-range goals
- Oversees the scheduling and routing of personnel and equipment to accomplish the work. The superintendent frequently inspects the Golf Course and related areas to evaluate how well management standards are being achieved and to effect changes in management programs.
- Acquires equipment and purchases necessary supplies to manage the Golf Course and other properties. The superintendent is responsible for inventory control and oversees the equipment maintenance programs. The superintendent approves all expenditures and exercises cost control measures to keep operating and capital expenses in line with the approved budgets.
- Keeps accurate and complete records on payroll, inventory, weather data, Golf Course management procedures, pesticide, fertilizer applications, etc.
- Communicates well and regularly with other members of the top management group to discuss activities, goals, plans, and member input. The superintendent also plays golf regularly with assistants, professionals, and general manager.
Employment Standards:
- Requires advanced study (Turfgrass Science Degree) and knowledge of agronomy and turfgrass management practices
- A working knowledge of golf facility construction principles, practices, and methods.
- A thorough understanding of the rules and strategies of the game of golf
- Requires a high degree of administrative and executive ability, especially in terms of problem solving and decision making.
- Requires excellent oral and written communications skill
- Requires knowledge of current federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting the management of Golf Course operations (including, but not limited to, employment, safety, and environmental standards, laws, and regulations.)
- Requires participation in continuing education opportunities such as seminars, workshops, correspondence courses, field days, and trade shows.
- Requires current state certification or licensing as a pesticide applicator.
