Seabrook Island Club is a member owned, private, 36 hole ocean front club outside Charleston, SC. The current position is for the Crooked Oaks Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr and opened in 1979. The superintendents of each course work together while each managing a Golf Course under the supervision of the Director of Agronomy. The successful candidate will be responsible for the planning, coordination, and execution of a maintenance program for the course. The Golf Course Superintendent should be adept at simultaneously managing multiple projects and tasks, with strong attention to detail, as well as a team player, working in collaboration with the leadership team, the Board and Club Committees. The position requires a high level of competency and the ability to manage, mentor and teach a team of Assistants, Irrigation techs, and a multilingual staff. The position, in partnership with the Seabrook Island Club leadership team, requires an innovative spirit and drive to elevate the member experience, highly developed interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communications skills and strong organizational skills.
Crooked Oaks will be undergoing a complete bunker renovation in the summer of '23 as well as a complete irrigation renovation in the winter to a Toro 2 Wire system. Construction experience is a plus.
Essential Job Functions:
- Maintain the Golf Course and property
- Work together with other Course Superintendent in supervising, scheduling, training, overseeing maintenance team members
- Create an efficient team and efficient maintenance practices to improve playing conditions and work force
- Improve course details and aesthetics
- Management of Champion Ultradwarf greens
- Use tools given to train and enforce safety practices
- Keep detailed records of chemical/fertilizer applications
- Carry out the goals set forth by the club and Director of Agronomy
- Employee management including, hiring, training, annual reviews and termination if necessary.
- Perform other duties to assist the elevation of the member club experience as directed by Director of Agronomy
Requirements
Skills:
- 2-4 year degree in turf or turf certificate required
- 4 years as an assistant superintendent in a private club preferred
- Construction experience preferred
- Ability to speak in Spanish a definite plus
Equipment to be used:
Large equipment, including tractors, loaders, trenchers, backhoes, gang mowers, bunker rakes trucks, utility vehicles, turf vac, fairway and rough aerifier and boom sprayer and other maintenance equipment. Operates light motorized equipment, such as weed-eaters, backpack blowers, hover mowers, and occasionally chain saws. Operate small hand-powered equipment. Also mechanically pressurized spray equipment, hand operated spray equipment, hand operated rotary spreaders and hand operated drop spreaders.
Typical Physical Demands:
Standing, walking, sitting, crawling, kneeling, bending, lifting, pushing, hearing, carrying items up to 50 pounds. Reaching, pulling, and ability to manipulate a variety of hand and power tools and large and small Golf Course equipment. Must endure inclement weather including hot and cold temperatures, precipitation and controlled exposure to chemicals, fertilizers, fumes and gases.
