General Job Description

The Texas General Land Office primarily serves the schoolchildren, veterans, and the environment of Texas. The agency does so by preserving our history, maximizing state revenue through innovative administration, and through the prudent stewardship of state lands and natural resources. This position is with our Surveying Services.

 

Performs surveying and mapping work involving measuring and recording data on land, buildings or construction projects; processing field survey data; and creating plans using computer aided design software

 

Veterans, Reservist or Guardsman with an MOS or additional duties that fall in the fields of Army -12TTechnical Engineer; Navy - EA - Engineering Aide; Coast Guard - No military equivalent; Marines -1361Engineer Assistant; Air Force - 3E3X1Structural or other related fields pertaining to the minimum experience requirement may meet the minimum qualifications for this position.

Essential Job Elements

  • Identifies, gathers, and compiles required geographic data from sources including censuses, field observations, satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and existing maps.
  • May inspect the work of private land surveyors or surveying/engineering companies for compliance with laws and specifications.
  • Assists with the development of geographic information systems that may link parcel maps or orthophotos with environmental data, archival/historic data, transportation data, and surveying data to produce maps or quantify information about the impacts of features on parcel ownership.
  • May import and store surveying data collected in the field and assist licensed Surveyors with the processing of field surveying data, analysis of the data, and surveying related computations.
  • Prepares working sketches utilizing AutoDesk Civil3D or other computer programs, compiles information from the archive records and other related sources for surveying projects, and makes recommendations for efficient operation of field surveys.
  • Reviews maps, graphs, and/or diagrams using geographical information software and related equipment.
  • May assist field surveying crew on projects such as boundary surveys, leveling of tide gauges, site inspections, and construction projects. Keeps current on proper use of modern land surveying equipment, including Global Positioning System (GPS) surveying instruments and software, electronic total stations and digital levels; assists with training team members and other division staff in the use of GPS systems and methodology, and electronic data collection.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of land surveying and mapping principles, techniques, and procedures; algebra, geometry, and trigonometry; and building construction methods and components. Skill in the use of computer and applicable software, including global positioning systems and computer aided design applications, and land surveying instruments and equipment. Ability to interpret field notes, sketches, plans, or specifications; to make mathematical calculations; to check/review drawings, computations, plans, estimates, design details, or specifications for accuracy; to analyze and solve drafting and design problems; and to communicate effectively.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the employee to primarily perform sedentary office work; however, mobility (moving around the work-site) is routinely required to carry out some duties. This position requires extensive computer, telephone and client/customer contact and communication. It requires the ability to move and position oneself as needed for filing and similar routine office duties. The job also requires normal cognitive abilities requiring the ability to learn, recall, and apply certain practices and policies. It requires the stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions. Ability to read printed materials and computer screens. The individual must be able to move and transport records, documents, boxes, and all related information and materials, weighing up to 20 pounds when required. The individual must be able to remain stationary for long periods of time when commuting to and from assigned destination and when traveling on state business including fieldwork and training assignments.

Minimum Qualifications (Education Experience)

Minimum two (2) years of college or university course completion; may substitute full-time land surveying, drafting, Geographic Information System, technical, or mathematics related experience on a year for year basis.

 

Experience with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and/or advanced experience with land boundary surveying.

 

Surveyor-in-Training (SIT) certification with the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced experience with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software (AutoCAD, Carlson CAD, etc.).

 

Qualified to take the Principles and Practice of Professional Surveying Exam (PS) with the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying, and the Texas Specific Surveying Exam (TSSE) with the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors within the next two (2) years.
