Position Title: GIS Technician
Overview
The Geospatial Science and Human Security Division is currently seeking qualified applicants for a GIS technician. In this role you will work with a team of talented researchers, engineers, and technologists to generate training datasets and review results of Machine Learning models processing Satellite Imagery in support of critical national security missions through a team-based approach and commitment to excellence.
You will work within the Human Geography, Built Environment or GeoAI Group and collaborate across the Geospatial Science and Human Dynamics Division at ORNL, where you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to the development of data derived from high resolution satellite imagery.
The successful candidate will support[RA1] challenging, multidisciplinary projects that advance our understanding of human processes as they interact with the natural and built environment. Solving problems motivated by national security challenges, you will use geospatial analysis to develop and review input data used to model the relationship between built environment characteristics and human population across space and time from remotely sensed data.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
· Review satellite imagery to generate training data for Machine Learning algorithms.
· Review ML model outputs and compare to satellite imagery to provide feedback on omission and false-positives in model output.
Basic Requirements
· Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geographic Information Science, or a related discipline.
· Experience in geospatial analysis including use of open source and/or commercial geospatial tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, PostGIS.
· Experience with remote sensing data (aerial and satellite imagery) and ability to identify and manipulate various features (e.g. buildings, roads, etc.)
· Experience with online mapping resources (Google, Bing, Open Street Map, etc).
· Experience in analyzing and interacting with structured or unstructured open source datasets.
· Capable of working on individual tasks within a team environment.
· Ability to develop and maintain a consistent workflow and attention to detail.
· Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience with Python, SQL, and/or other similar languages for spatial processing.
· Knowledge of building construction techniques, methods, and architecture.
Additionally, CSL is an experienced, safe, compliant, and connected materials waste management and transportation subcontractor. CSL maintains a focus on environmental compliance, safety, radioactive and hazardous materials waste logistics, transportation, and disposal management.
