Job description

The Versar Environmental Management group is seeking a full time Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist with experience developing content for a range of environmental documents in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and other federal, tribal, state, and local environmental regulations and requirements. The ideal candidate will be proficient with ArcGIS and will provide quality technical support, including applying GIS spatial datasets to analyze proposed projects and solve complex problems associated with environmental documents. The applicant will also be expected to generate figures, and graphic presentations to support company and/or client objectives and deliverables.

This role will require proficient organizational skills and time management with the ability to manage varying priorities and multiple tasks while meeting concurrent deadlines on multiple projects.


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in geography, ecology, forestry, biology, and geology, or natural resources management closely related field with emphases in GIS.
  • Thorough knowledge of the ESRI ecosystem (ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, ArcGIS Online)
  • Use of ESRI products to create and maintain GIS datasets and databases including:
    • Converting data stored in varying formats to the preferred geodatabase format.
    • Building and editing route systems requiring population and editing of large datasets.
    • Utilizing geodatabase rules and best practices to maintain data integrity, including metadata generation.
  • Research available datasets from multiple sources and incorporate into existing datasets and geodatabases as necessary.
  • Exposure to NEPA documents with a willingness to assist with document reviews, including providing support for a variety of high-level analyses and evaluations related to environmental due diligence, environmental compliance, and resource assessments for government and private clients.
  • Experience in data collection, update and portrayal, including scanning, digitizing, conversion, migration, compression image processing, plotting, editing, maintenance, metadata and distribution of geospatial data. Experience with standard geospatial datasets such as DOQs, DEMs, DRGs, etc.
  • Fundamental knowledge of GIS-related concepts, mapping techniques, products, and geospatial industry practices, independent of software platform.
  • Strong proficiency with MS Office tools, including Excel and Access, with the ability to learn new software and procedures.
  • Develop and undertake GIS spatial-relational database projects. Responsible for complex analysis and representation of data in maps or figures as appropriate.
  • Strong verbal & written communication skills, including the ability to bridge the gap between technical and non-technical staff. Excellent organizational and time management skills: simultaneously work on, manage, and prioritize multiple tasks/projects, while meeting all deadlines and expectations.
  • Self-starter with the desire and willingness to take the lead on a task.

Preferred Experience:

  • Past experience preparing GIS deliverables for DoD clients in the current version of the Spatial Data Standards (SDSFIE) in use by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC).
  • Willingness to contribute to scopes of work, budgets, and schedules as part of task expansion or new proposals with guidance from more experienced staff.
  • Previous experience in preparation of technical reports and environmental documentation.
  • Knowledge, skill and experience using various associated software products such as ERDAS Imagine, Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat, Dreamweaver, Microsoft Excel and Access, and Trimble Positions etc.
  • Ability to create basic user applications and interfaces using various programming languages (i.e., Visual Basic and Python).
  • Knowledge of 3D point cloud scene layer platforms such as Autodesk, Pointfuse, Global Mapper, Scene Viewer, ArcGIS Earth, and ArcGIS Pro a plus.
  • Knowledge of GPS technology (i.e., Trimble GPS), software platforms (e.g., ArcPad, and TerraSync) and software, with the ability to produce computer map products depicting contents of databases, write basic software routines to facilitate analysis, locate sources of GIS data from Government, state agencies, and private companies.
