Job description

The principal function of an employee in this class is to assist in the development and maintenance of the GIS System within the City of Bozeman. Additional responsibilities include project management and training and support for software integrations. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of the GIS Manager, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the City Manager, Department Heads, other City employees, elected officials, vendors, other government agencies, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in a general office environment.

Work Week: Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

  • Develops and maintains the Geographic Information System, including preparing data, records, and output; collection of Geographical Positioning System (GPS) data; scanning record drawings into document management systems; and integrating routine maintenance information into various GIS applications;
  • Provides support for software integrations between the City's GIS, Sungard, Cityworks, and other database systems;
  • Provides training, demonstrations and technical support to personnel in the operation of the Geographic Information System and personal computers;
  • Develops quality controls and standard operating procedures to ensure data integrity;
  • Makes recommendations for new software acquisitions;
  • Assists in the evaluation, troubleshooting and managing of the GIS and GPS system hardware;
  • Researches and compiles a variety of information materials from outside sources, summarizes the information, and prepares related reports accordingly;
  • Researches and recommends technology initiatives related to the City's Geographic Information System including acquiring, refining, manipulating, and merging spatial information from diverse sources;
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems or suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas;
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
  • Responds to questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
  • Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Geography, Computer Science or a related field; and
  • 1 to 3 years of experience with GIS-related software, GIS-related database management, and GPS hardware, software and mapping; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • Thorough knowledge of GIS software, databases and related applications, and of GPS hardware and software;
  • Thorough knowledge of database design and development, working with relational database systems, and in the creation and maintenance of the systems.
  • Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn ESRI ArcGIS products including ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Server, ArcSDE, and asset management systems;
  • Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn object-oriented programming languages and web technologies;
  • Ability to analyze, interpret and develop solutions in a timely manner;
  • Ability to visualize abstract concepts and effectively communicate them to others;
  • Ability to utilize critical thinking and logic in dealing with systems problems;
  • Ability to exercise sound, independent judgment and work with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and data;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with assigned supervisors , other City employees, elected officials, vendors, and the general public;
  • Ability to interpret and apply Federal, State, and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
  • Ability to effectively train staff;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures and instructions;
  • Ability to create queries, expressions, and formulas to write effective technical reports, flowcharts, topological data and other related data;
  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;
  • Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;
  • Ability to follow proper safety procedures; take proper care of City-owned equipment and tools;
  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
  • Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.

  • Valid Class D Driver's License (or equivalent) and must obtain a Montana Class D Driver's license within sixty (60) days of employment;
