Job Description
Please note that this is a seasonal position and will start in April 2024.
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
To operate ARRC Gift Shop, selling and maintaining inventory control of retail items.
Duties and Responsibilities:Responsible for the daily operation of ARRC Gift Shop. Duties include opening and closing of store, setting up and putting away displays as needed; setting up advertising displays or arranging merchandise to promote sales; operating cash register, computer inventory tracking system, and credit card machine. Responsible for Gift Shop's cash bank. Duties include performing check out and balancing the end of the day accounting paperwork involving cash, credit card, and internal sales; preparing daily deposits, preparing and receiving change orders, reconciling and preparing daily sales reports.Responsible for adequacy of Gift Shop inventory. Duties include replenishing supplies by completing daily inventory sheets and submitting to the Gift Shop Warehouse, retrieving new stock from the Warehouse, verifying all items are labeled with accurate price tags, and keeping track of out of stock items. Updates shop inventory record to support spot inventory audits.Assists theGift Shop Inventory Technician in processing all Gift Shop orders made online or via phone. Pulls and processes sales, bags, addresses items and submits to the Warehouse for mailing. Enters data into data base and prepares tally of data from onboard surveys relating to customers satisfaction, comments, etc. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related duties as needed.
Factor 1 - Knowledge Required
Basic knowledge of accounting procedures is required. Knowledge of inventory control. Ability to total prices of individual items purchased, collect cash or charge card payment, and make change is required. Skill in operation of cash register, credit card machine, 10-key by sight, and fax machine. Ability to reconcile daily sales reports, prepare deposits, and maintain balanced cash funds. Basic computer skills using computerized cash register and inventory control system, word processing, spreadsheet, and e-mail software. Ability to communicate effectively and resolve problems with minimal supervision. Skill in setting up advertising displays or arranging merchandise to promote sales.
Factor 2 - Supervisory Control
Incumbent performs under the general direction of the Gift Shop Inventory Technician and overall supervision of the Manager, Passenger Depot Services who provide procedural guidelines. Work is reviewed in terms of timeliness, accuracy, ability to prioritize and accomplish daily tasks while maintaining a high level of organization.
Factor 3 - Guidelines
Established Gift Shop operational procedures are utilized; i.e., accountability of sales, inventory, safeguarding the change fund and cash received for purchases, and balance the end of the day accounting paperwork (Cash, Credit Cards, Checks/Traveler's Checks and AKRR internal orders).
Factor 4 - Complexity
This position ensures the Gift Shop is stocked and organized, items are well displayed, price tags are accurate, storeroom inventory is kept up-to-date and well organized at all times. Ensures security of Gift Shop stock at all times. Accountable for all monies and sales transaction reports. Resolves problems resulting from inventory, accounting discrepancies and cash register or credit card machine malfunctions.
Factor 5 - Scope and Effect
Accuracy in handling cash funds, merchandise pricing, and maintenance of inventory has a direct impact on income for ARRC.
Factor 6 - Personal Contacts
Contacts include employees, supervisors, tour guides, and the general public. General public includes independent travelers, travel agents, tour companies, and operators.
Factor 7 - Purpose of Contact
To sell ARRC Gift Shop retail items and answers inquiries regarding on-line sales and mail order procedures.
Factor 8 - Physical Demands
Incumbent may be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Factor 9 - Work Environment
Work involves moderate risk of discomfort which requires safety precautions; i.e., moving displays from storeroom to shop, moving and unpacking boxes, organizing stock on shelves in storeroom and working around and onboard moving trains. This is typically seasonal work from approximately April to September.
Minimum Qualifications
Required:
-High School diploma or GED
-One year (1) of front line customer service.
-Skill in operation of cash register, credit cardequipment, 10-key by sight, and fax machine.
-Basic computer skills using computerized cash register and inventory system, word processing, spreadsheet, and e-mail software.
-Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Preferred:
-Retail sales store operations.

The following briefly describes the main benefits available to regular employees of the Alaska Railroad Corporation. Actual benefits differ by bargaining unit.
Retirement Plans
ARRC Pension Plan - Participation is mandatory. You are automatically enrolled in the Plan when you meet the eligibility requirement of your bargaining unit. Employees contribute 9% of their Earnings on a pre-tax basis. The Railroad is exempt from participation in Social Security; however, Medicare Tax is withheld. Participants vest with 5 years of eligible Vesting Service which entitles one to receive a pension benefit at retirement age.
Tier 2 Description (Employees hired after July 1, 2015)
Normal Retirement Age is age 65, however, the plan allows one to retire as early as age 60. The formula for a monthly Normal Retirement Benefits is 2% x Final Average Earnings x all Credited Service.
Early retirement, survivor and disability benefits are available for vested participants.
401(k) Tax Deferred Savings Plan - Participation is optional. You may enroll once you meet the eligibility requirement of your bargaining unit. Depending on the bargaining unit, there may be an employer match.
457 Deferred Compensation Plan - Participation is optional for non-represented employees.
Insurance and Flexible Spending Plans
All plans are optional except the RR Dental Plan for bargaining unit employees.
Health Insurance Plan
A comprehensive health insurance plan, self-insured by the ARRC and administered by Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alaska. Coverage is also available for the employee's spouse and dependent children. ARRC and the participant share the premium cost. Bargaining unit employees are Eligibility after 90 days, and non-represented employees are eligible as of the date of hire.
The Railroad offers a Prefered Provider Organization plan (PPO Blue Essentials) and a Consumer Directed Healthcare Plan with a Health Saving Account (Gold Essentials). The Plans have the following features.
The Railroad also offers two dental plans.
The Railroad National Dental for repersneted employees
The Alaska Railroad Optional Dental Plan for both represented and non-represented employees.

0-3 Years of Service = 4 Hours

>15 Years of Service = 10 Hours
Sick Leave: accrues at 4 hours (Represented) or 2 hours (Non-Represented) per pay period.
