Under the general direction of the Endoscopist and Nursing staff performs all duties that support patient care in the Endoscopy and GI Motility Units. These duties include direct and indirect patient care activities which are essential to providing comprehensive care to patients. Performs duties within an appropriate time frame, participates as a team member, contributing to a positive work environment. Demonstrates an outstanding commitment to excellent customer service, learning and skill development. Patient and family centered care (PFCC) at YNHH is demonstrated by working with patients and their families based on the 4 principles of PFCC: participation, dignity and respect, information sharing, and collaboration. Responsibilities:
    1. Performs technical duties which contribute to safe, effective, and efficient patient care delivery. Checks, maintains, and assures proper working condition of all equipment including suction, air, light source, scopes, and cameras. 1.1. Inspects, problem solves, and initiates for repair or replacement as necessary for non-functioning equipment. 1.2. During emergencies, supports the nursing staff and team in the procurement of equipment and supplies, delivery of laboratory specimens, blood bank pick-ups, and other general emergency procedures. 1.3 Understands and applies the principles of aseptic technique at all times. Assists in the opening of sterile supplies for procedures when applicable. 1.4. Checks for outdates of sterile supplies, removes them from use, and assures proper replacement in conjunction with the Clinical Nurse. 1.5 Responsible for cleaning, handling, and proper storage of scopes and accessories. Performs pre-cleaning and decontamination of scopes per manufacture recommendations including terminal sterilization (where applicable) by required methods following established procedures.
    2. Assists the Clinical nurse and provider in providing patient care. 2.1. Demonstrates patient centered care knowledge, attitudes, behaviors when delivering care including comfort and privacy. 2.2. Independently follows standards of procedure, properly prepares the procedure room. Prepares the patient which may include vital signs, EKG, and point of care testing. (Applying EKG electrodes, B/ P cuff, and pulse oximeter if applicable) under the direction of the Clinical nurse. 2.3. Transports patients via wheel chair, stretcher, and/or ambulation, always verifying the correct patient using the YNHH approved identifiers(patient name, MRUN, band or birth date)and introducing self to patient and family. 2.4 Ensures a safe environment with special consideration in the use of 02, side rails, restraints, and electrical equipment. 2.5. In collaboration with the Clinical Nurse, reviews schedule, plans for equipment, supplies, and participates in problem-solving activities(i.e., towers, x-rays, beds, etc). 2.6. Assists with lifting, transferring, and positioning the patient. Demonstrates the ability to anticipate the needs of the Endoscopist / Physician during procedure, including specimen collection providing required assistance. 2.7. Handles and processes specimens in accordance with policy and procedure as necessary under the direction of Clinical nurse. Assists with end of procedure process, precleans, and transports equipment from room for appropriate advanced cleaning process post procedure. 2.8. Demonstrates an uncompromising commitment to patient safety, and participates quality/performance improvement initiatives as assigned.
    3. Performs responsibilities which contribute to the efficient operation of the unit. Participates in keeping the environment clean and organized. 3.1. Facilitates rooming and/or patient transport upon request. Initiates actions to correct inadequate supplies, faulty equipment, and environmental problems. Informs the Patient Service Manager or designated charge nurse. 3.2. Follows SGNA recommended practices for care of equipment, endoscopes and accessories. 3.3. Keeps the equipment and equipment parts cleaned, organized and in proper working order. 3.4. Keeps the environment clean and organized 3 5. Assists with the preparation and turnover of rooms to ensure efficiency. Assists as cases are breaking to expedite efficient room turnover by assisting with cleaning of the room, transportation of the patient, opening sterile supplies, and obtaining appropriate equipment. 3 6. Cleans, decontaminates, inspects, and maintains all endoscopic equipment according to design and type, following written instructions. 3.7. Maintains daily records of equipment as directed and within scope of responsibility. 3.8. Adheres to universal precautions and observes principles of clean technique when handling equipment. 3.9. Anticipates equipment needs for scheduled procedures.
    4. Maintains competency in areas of responsibility and participates in unit activities that promote a cohesive staff group. 4.1. Completes on line mandatory continuing education classes as required. Ensures completion of occupational health requirements are met. 4.2. Participates in unit and/or service-related continuing education classes. Attends and actively participates in staff meetings. If unable to attend, accepts responsibility for reviewing educational material and minutes and signing appropriate sheet. 4.3. Supports an environment that values learning. 4.4. Participates as a team member and contributes to the cohesiveness of the department to ensure the maintenance of a positive working environment.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION

High School graduate or equivalent, Certification of Basic Life Support (BLS), Annual unit specific competencies, 10 (CEUs) annually

EXPERIENCE

Minimum 1 year of patient care or ambulatory clinical support as PCA, ACA, MA, GI tech or equivalent experience

LICENSURE

Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) within 6 months of hire.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Excellent communications, interpersonal, coordinative, and organizational skills. Knowledge of Endoscopic room procedure and universal precautions. Excellent communication skills. Individual must be able to tolerate high stress areas of work. Ability to read, writes, and perform basic math. All duties require some pushing, pulling, bending and standing. Must be able to read instructional materials and labels. Must be able to take and follow direction. Must be able to participate as member of the patient care team.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds. Ability to perform tasks of physical endurance and dexterity as required. Consistent use of proper body mechanics.
