AZTEC is seeking resumes from qualified Geotechnical Project Engineers for our Irvine, California office, with flexibility for hybrid work schedule. The Geotechnical Project Engineer will be involved in the geotechnical aspects of a wide variety of civil engineering projects including transportation, rail and transit, energy, and water, in North American and beyond. This will include geotechnical design of foundations, retaining structures, tunnels, slope stability, earthworks, and earthquake engineering. Underground construction is an important part of our portfolio, and the Geotechnical Engineer will contribute to exciting and challenging tunneling projects in a multidisciplinary and collaborative environment.
Primary Job Duties:
- Plan and manage geotechnical investigation programs. Field work is not anticipated but experience in conducting geotechnical investigations, logging, and classification is a plus
- Data interpretation and derivation of geotechnical design parameters, including advanced constitutive models
- Perform geotechnical engineering and tunneling analyses including: shallow and deep foundation design, settlement analysis, slope stability, earth retaining systems, support of excavation, soil-structure interaction, tunneling face pressure calculations, stability of underground excavations, calculation of induced movements and construction impact assessment, and seismic hazard evaluation (including ground motions, liquefaction, and lateral spreading)
- Prepare geotechnical engineering reports, memorandums, proposals, specifications, drawings, and other related deliverables
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, locally and internationally
Job Qualifications (Education, Experience, and Skills):
- Minimum of Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Geological Engineering. Masters Degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Geological Engineering is a plus
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required, preferably in the state of California. Ability to obtain California PE within one year of hire if licensed in a different state.
- Minimum 3 years of professional experience in the geotechnical engineering / tunneling industry
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills and a sound technical background in soil and rock mechanics
- Attention to detail, dedication to quality and accuracy
- Knowledge about finite element modelling is a plus
- Experience with various commercial geotechnical software such as gINT, Rocscience (Slide, Settle3D, RS2, RS2, etc), Ensoft (Shaft, LPIle, Apile), MSEW, and/or PLAXIS
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Working knowledge of standard business software including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Knowledge of CAD/GIS/BIM software is a plus

This position will require general supervision and will have to use independent judgment within established guidelines. Generally, uses advanced knowledge to analyze, interpret, or make deductions from varying facts or circumstances. Will need the ability to establish rapport quickly with others working on the same project, and be able to promote a positive team environment. Working knowledge of dealing with a diverse population while using tact, diplomacy, and respect.
