The Canyon County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) is seeking a motivated GIS Intern. In this role, the intern will gain valuable experience and insight into how emergency services GIS data is created and utilized across departments and software platforms that will be critical to entering the workforce as a GIS professional.
THE FOLLOWING ADDITIONAL FORMS ARE MANDATORY FOR ALL DEPUTY SHERIFF APPLICANTS. Application will be considered INCOMPLETE if not submitted with online application:

Hourly Wage: $18.00

General Statement of Duties
Performs a variety of skilled technical, cartographic and analytical work in connection with the investigation, development and maintenance of the Canyon County GIS Database. Performs moderate routine and non-routine technical assignments; performs related work as required.
Classification Summary
The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform skilled technical duties to create, maintain, update and develop Canyon County Emergency Services GIS Data. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the CCSO GIS Manager. The principal duties of this class are performed in a general office environment with occasional field work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (may vary with specific positions, this list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary):
  • Performs complex GIS data maintenance, manipulation, analysis, and extraction assignments
  • Performs data research, investigation and verification; creates, updates, and maintains geospatial data for use in various hardcopy and digital products for internal and external users
  • Collects data in the field using a Global Positioning System (GPS) as well as obtaining hardcopy floorplans and facility maps from businesses, schools, and mobile home parks.
  • Uses cartographic techniques to represent spatial data; develops and maintains data layers, using GIS tools, and relational databases
  • Develop and execute quality control methods that will assist in discovering errors in production layers
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with County policies, procedures, and safety practices

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
  • GIS concepts and analytical techniques, including computerized mapping and digital data conversion, manipulation and analysis
  • GIS technologies to perform workflows using Model Builder, and Geoprocessing Tools
  • GIS database management principles, methods and techniques, including quality control methods and practices
  • GPS Field data collection techniques and related software
  • Knowledge of GIS software, tools, and applications including ArcGIS and applications of MS Office Suite
  • Hardware and software applications development methods, tools and utilities applicable to the GIS system
  • Principles and practices of GIS analysis and design
  • Programming/scripting languages including Python and Arcade
  • Interpersonal communication skills

Ability to:
  • Use a variety of information from diverse sources to create GIS data and efficient and effective maps and applications
  • Create, maintain, and update a GIS map and database system
  • Operate standard office equipment and a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties
  • Operate a motor vehicle
  • Work collaboratively across county departments and emergency services agencies
  • Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing
  • Understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures and instructions
  • Analyze complex problems, evaluate alternatives and make sound independent decisions within established guidelines
  • Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks

Acceptable Experience and Training
  • High School diploma or GED required; and
  • Must be enrolled in either a certificate or 2 to 4-year post-secondary education program
    • Must be in good in academic standing (GPA of 2.0 or higher)
    • Must have completed some GIS coursework and be familiar with GIS software
  • Must have intent of pursuing GIS professionally

Special Qualifications
  • Valid Idaho driver's license;
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation

  • Sufficient personal mobility, agility, strength, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to work at a keyboard for an extended period of time, to reach, stoop, bend and stretch in filing materials, and to work in an office environment.
