Genetic Counselor

Position Summary

Stony Brook Medicine is currently recruiting for a full-time certified Genetic Counselor with focus in pediatric diagnoses, as well as providing collaborative support for the Stony Brook Cancer Center and prenatal services as part of the clinical and medical geneticist team. This position is integral to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and provides the opportunity excel in multidisciplinary teams focused on excellence in patient diagnosis, care coordination and patient-centered communication.

Duties of an Genetic Counselor  may include the following but are not limited to:

  • Provide genetic counseling in coordination with the medical geneticist for pediatric patients identified with genetic disorders or anomalies.
  • Document clinic sessions with notes written in a timely fashion.
  • Order Genetic labs tests, keep in touch with labs and patients, obtain consents.
  • Collaborate with genetic counseling team members to provide cross-coverage of oncology and prenatal services as needed.
  • Discuss benefits and limitations of genetic testing options.
  • Assist families in understanding genetic disorders: probable course of the disorder, available management strategies, and recurrence risks.
  • Develop and present education and related information with team as appropriate.
  • Participate in research protocols and collaborative patient care initiatives as directed.
  • Perform administrative tasks related to counseling services and committees or special projects in which participation is expected.
  • Provide teaching and supervision to students or other health care professionals as appropriate.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Board eligible/certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics/American Board of Genetic Counseling. If board eligible, achievement of this milestone required within 1 year.
  • Excellent communication skills, compassion for patients and collaborative work ethic.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Spanish speaking preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrated experience counseling in all areas: Pediatrics, Prenatal, Oncology
  • Proven ability work in both team-based and autonomous environments.

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.
