PURPOSE:

The General Laborer role offers a seasonal opportunity for individuals with varying levels of experience in maintenance, including refrigeration, plumbing/heating, electrical work, and other general maintenance tasks. As an integral part of our local operation, General Laborers help provide temporary help and support to the maintenance department and our facilities. This is a labor-intensive position and does not require specific experience or education. It serves as a valuable opportunity for someone aspiring to enter the maintenance career, offering on-the-job experience and guidance under a mentor. Whether you're seeking a temporary position for the season or aiming to break into the field, this role provides a supportive environment to learn and contribute to maintaining the excellence of our operations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES:

The essential duties of the General Laborer consist of, but are not limited to, the following responsibilities:

• THE CUSTOMER IS THE FIRST PRIORITY; the entire store is in the forefront of that activity, and every member of the store's team is here to fully support that priority with prompt and friendly service.
• Perform troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance on refrigeration systems.
• Perform basic maintenance tasks, such as changing light bulbs or fixing minor facility issues.
• Assist with general maintenance tasks, including snow removal from walkways and parking lots, parking lot maintenance, and routine inspections of store facilities.
• Ensure the exterior of the store, including landscaping, is well-kept.
• Perform general carpentry work for repairs and improvements.
• Assist in organizing and managing inventory in the storage areas.
• Assist in setting up and taking down equipment for special events or promotions.
• Provide support during busy seasons or events that require additional assistance.
• Keep storage areas, including stockrooms and backrooms, clean and well-organized.
• Assist with painting and touch-up tasks to maintain the store's appearance.
• Collaborate with the maintenance team to ensure facilities are clean, safe, and well-maintained. Operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment, as needed.
• Safely operate machinery such as pallet jacks or compactors.
• Perform routine checks on store equipment to ensure proper functioning.
• Help move and assemble store fixtures, shelves, and displays as needed.
• Be prepared to assist maintenance crew in emergency situations.
• Perform all duties in accordance with company rules, policies, safety requirements, and security standards.
• Adhere to all local, state, and federal health and safety regulations.
• Complete assigned tasks promptly, ethically, and prudently.
• Be flexible and willing to take on additional general maintenance tasks as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Maintenance and/or the assigned project manager.

PHYSICAL AND GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

• High school diploma or equivalent qualification.
• Possess strong communication and writing skills.
• Demonstrate the ability to read and comprehend instructions and information.
• Possess a valid Alaskan Drivers License, and comfortable operating a snow plow, forklift or other heavy machinery.
• This position involves sitting, standing for extended periods, walking, bending, climbing stairs, and carrying loads up to 50 pounds.
• Flexibility to work early mornings, late nights, holidays, and weekends as required.
• Adaptability to handle the dynamic and varied nature of maintenance tasks.
• Physical strength and exertion required as part of maintenance duties.
• Collaborate effectively with colleagues and other departments.
• Adhere strictly to safety policies, security standards, and company rules and regulations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work may involve exposure to various weather conditions and temperatures depending on maintenance requirements. The role may encompass continuous duties in refrigerated rooms and storage areas with occasional responsibilities in frozen storage boxes maintained at temperatures as low as 20 degrees below zero. Additionally, work may entail frequent exposure to heated ovens and high temperatures; however, duration of exposure is generally brief or transient and is task related. The atmospheric environment may occasionally contain airborne particles and other finely powdered substances and frequent aromatic odors consistent with grocery and retail operations. The work can be physically demanding, involving exposure to repetitive motions, chemicals, and working on surfaces that may be wet and slippery.

The position may require working in extreme conditions and using various tools and equipment. This may involve climbing ladders, operating machinery, and driving a vehicle as part of maintenance tasks. Applicants should be prepared for physically challenging tasks and be adaptable to a dynamic work environment.
