Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under broad direction, provides on-site supervision of the Directional Drilling (DD) process on behalf of the client, including analysis of the projection of the underground well path to predetermined target coordinates established by the client.
  • Interprets and analyzes relevant computer data and makes real-time decisions based on analyzed DD data regarding the direction of the Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) equipment for underground drilling operations to determine if adjustments in the target coordinates are advisable to the client.
  • Consult with and advise client representative responsible for drilling operations onsite on the Company's DD services and instructs the third-party drilling rig crew engaged by the client, to steer the BHA to the target coordinates.
  • Understands principles of BHA selection and of its impact on DD performance.
  • Consults on-site with Measurement-While-Drilling (MWD) engineer and ensures that BHAs are assembled as planned.
  • Directs the third-party drilling rig crew to ensure the correct make-up torque, doping and handling.
  • Consults with the client's on-site representative and advises the client, based on expert judgement and experience, when changes to the well plan, drilling program, equipment, or drilling methods are warranted.
  • Selects BHA components and oversees the assembly of BHA that is optimized for DD performance and to achieve the client's goals; collaborates with the Measurement While Drilling (MWD) engineer to ensure BHA compatibility, planned operating parameters are safely achievable, and correct toolface references are applied.
  • Provide on the job training and mentorship to less experienced DD personnel, evaluating their performance and providing evaluation to management.
  • Coordinates and fosters teamwork among various stakeholders, including client representative, third-party drill site manager, drilling engineer, geologist, geosteerer, driller, DD coordinator, and business development, and supervises and instructs third-party employees of drilling contractor.
  • Oversees and assists with all client and internal reporting requirements, including field service tickets, daily drilling reports, end-of-well reports, and analysis of BHA runs, equipment performance, and lessons learned for future reference.
  • Responsible for Company assets on location and manages the inventory of DD equipment and ensures that adequate supplies and equipment are present at the job site to fulfill the client's scope of work.
  • Inspects and maintains records of DD company equipment at the well site, including dimensional data and condition.


Qualifications:

  • Requires completion of a high school diploma or equivalent, and a minimum of five years of experience in DD, MWD, and/or LWD.
  • Completion of an undergraduate degree in a STEM discipline preferred.
  • Must possess relevant rig safety certificates where applicable.
