Project Outline:
The GI2 (Gastrointestinal and Inflammation) Drug Discovery Unit (DDU) is a highly collaborative and cross-functional early research group of Takeda colleagues who share a goal to progress research programs into the GI2 Therapeutic Area Unit (TAU) clinical research pipeline. This diverse group is responsible for the review and prioritization of the GI2 research portfolio across all internal Takeda teams involved in GI2 research and all collaborative effort with external partners. All efforts are made by this team to bring better health to patients with conditions such as Celiac Disease, IBD, and Liver Fibrosis.
Our specific area focuses on the management of external specialty labs and internal lab operations. We design and develop internal lab capabilities around chemistry, in vitro pharmacology, histopathology, imaging, and biobank. Our team further supports laboratory and business operations including operational and capital equipment budget management, and vendor contracts management.
The operations team provides support to the GI2 DDU with communications, lab and space planning, financial budgeting and reporting, FTE reports, procurement of external services, lab equipment, lab materials (including human tissue samples), compliant use of electronic notebook experiment entries, software licenses and maintenance, event planning, and travel budget. The efforts of the operations team allows the scientific experts to focus on the technical aspects of their work. The internship project will involve review of all the work products of the operations team and propose improvements in organization, content, and methodology through increased use of data, digital, and technology.
This paid internship position requires a candidate to be pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree (as well as related minor will be considered) in a related scientific field such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry, forensic sciences, biotechnology, etc. and/or computer science, data science, etc.
Specifically, we are looking for a candidate who has business and/or technology education with expertise or ability to master excel, smart sheets, and PowerBI applications. No prior knowledge of the technology areas mentioned above is required. You will be coordinating with subject matter experts and experienced operations personnel to complete your project.
In addition, you will learn other aspects that the team supports including what Confidentiality Agreements (CDAs), Master Service Agreements (MSAs), and Statements of Work (SOWs) are and why they are important. You will also learn about the vendor assessment and onboarding process, including qualification and compliance. As part of the project and overall learning opportunities you will collaborate with other functional areas outside of Research and Development including Legal (privacy and intellectual property), Procurement (contracts and equipment purchasing), and Quality (qualifications of external and internal labs).
The position is hybrid, with a mix of days in office on site in Cambridge, Mass and remote. Ideal candidate should be interested in the operational and quality aspects of a laboratory and what is needed to make a lab functional, safe, and compliant with internal policies as well as applicable regulations in order to generate and record reliable data. Interest in the business functionality of a lab, or pharmaceutical company, or any of the technology areas listed above would also be beneficial. The experience and knowledge gained from this internship will directly support a career as a bench scientist or as laboratory or business operations.
How you will contribute:

  • Exceptional interpersonal, verbal communication and writing skills.
  • Deadline-driven with an elevated level of organizational and planning skills.
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, problem solving and conceptual skills.
