Description
This position will provide the intern with the opportunity to gain a strong understanding of the issues surrounding food insecurity in the DMV Area. While working with our nutrition education team, he/she will get an in-depth look into various programs and approaches that are being deployed directly by the Food Bank and indirectly through food assistance organizations to address the issue of food insecurity both in the short and longer term. He/she will also gain valuable training and experience that will allow them to confidently educate others about nutrition and food growing. Interns are a vital part of the Capital Area Food Bank.
The Nutrition and Garden Education Intern will work closely with the Nutrition Education team to develop and implement several nutrition education and food growing initiatives in the community. The intern will also support the team with administrative tasks related to our food assistance partner organizations and other client programming.

Description

The Nutrition and Garden Education Intern will work closely with the Nutrition Education team to develop and implement several nutrition education and food growing initiatives in the community. Essential Functions:
Program Support - (60%)
- Assist with development and execution of workshops/classes, which includes presentations (in-person and/or virtual), events and student field trips
- Categorize and tag food in CAFB's databases according to different nutrition guidelines
- May help conduct food demos/food samples on-site at partner or direct distribution sites.
- Help conduct and manage outreach to partners and schools in support of department programming.
- Survey administration and data entry.
- Help organize and maintain resources and Nutrition education/garden spaces
- Assist with regular garden maintenance and seasonal tasks as needed, including but not limited to helping manage volunteers, weeding, watering, organic pest management, and harvesting.
Material development, distribution, and organization (30%)
- Design and distribute nutrition education and food growing education materials as needed.
- Assist with management, tracking and distribution of nutrition education and food growing materials/resources. Examples include recipe cards or seed/seedling donations.
- May help team with recipe development: researching, testing, conducting nutrient analysis, participating in video creation, card production
Miscellaneous - (10%)
- Assist other departments with food growing and Nutrition education goals across the organization.
- Timely and consistent expense tracking.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
- Commitment to work for a six-month period
- High school diploma/GED
- Proficiency with basic computer software programs (including MS Word)
- Excellent customer service skills
- Ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a team
- Volunteer or work-related experience preferred
- Access to a car is preferred
Other Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities developed with the supervisor.
- Comfort with and sincere interest in nutrition and/or food growing.
- Nutrition education-related and/or garden knowledge/experience/background preferred.
- Experience working with the target audience (limited resources) preferred.
- Experience in education or other relevant work experience preferred.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions:
- Ability to lift/carry 30 pounds.
- This position's main office will be at Capital Area Food Bank's DC Office in NE, Washington DC.
- Ability to travel to our partner sites throughout the DMV as needed.
- Ability to participate in physical garden-related activities; willingness to work outside in all types of weather.
Reporting:
- This role reports to the Senior Manager of Nutrition Education, but will also work closely with the Food Growing Education Specialist
Schedule:
- This role will be required to report for approximately 20 hours a week. Some hybrid work may be possible.
Compensation:
- Compensation is $17.00/hour
