Gallery Assistant and Digital Projects Coordinator

This position staffs Gallery operations: installation and deinstallation of exhibits and supervising the space and seeing through regular work processes. The incumbent performs digital and physical collections work by creating new content, both written and images, preparing such digital content for publication, and updating public facing sites to share Seton Hall's collections. Must identify new problems in the database with close attention to detail and only general guidance, solve installation problems where established procedures may not exist. Conducts research into the history and background of objects in the collections that must be interpreted, identifies objects in need of conservation, which requires close observation skills and a great deal of technical knowledge. Considerable judgment is exercised in the application of knowledge of Gallery practices and procedures to specific and unique situations, interfaces with the general public and collaborates with colleagues in both Special Collections and the Gallery on high-value materials.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Collections work: Photograph objects, conduct image post-processing in Adobe Suite, create object mounts for storage and exhibition, maintain and enhance object records in the PastPerfect database with reference to professional nomenclature and data standards. Store objects and produce objects from storage for exhibition or loan, maintaining accurate and up to date location records at all times .Working as part of a team, maintain a secure environment in gallery and collections work and storage spaces. Interface with campus departments about collections care issues, troubleshoot issues with collections storage and data filing. Share expertise about collections objects and handling practices with students and researchers as appropriate.
Digital projects: Data cleanup projects on the PastPerfect database, export records for Digital Projects and adapt data for those projects as directed using Excel, export and resize images for print and Digital publication, including 3D object files, import images and data into public facing exhibit portals. Create original content for web publication and edit posts drafted by others across several platforms and interfaces. Organize and maintain digital and physical file structure and add new files following standard naming and storage practices.
Gallery duties: Staff entrance desk and perform work there (described above), maintain calendars and schedules for exhibits and displays in auxiliary spaces, assist with installation and deinstallation of exhibits, facilitate loans and associated paperwork, create condition reports for loans and exhibits, light exhibits and prepare labels. Independently facilitate communications between exhibit stakeholders, coordinate exhibit related events, Field questions from the public and supervise student workers, documenting and updating their workflow documents. This require extensive multitasking and prioritization skills.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree -- field of study: Museum Studies.
1-3 years work experience in a museum or special collections with art and
artifacts.
Creative problem solving.
General office (MS Suite), Adobe Suite.
Must edit and create clear original content.
Must collaborate with others.
Desired Qualifications:

Master's Degree in related field.
Familiarity with higher education and facility with database work as well as maintaining front end portals.
Digital imaging and Photoshop skills, facility with Past Perfect or equivalent collections management database, data cleanup and processing in Excel, familiarity with 3D scanning file types and image specifications.
Art handling, accessioning and condition reporting, mount making, art installation, basic knowledge of the tools for exhibition installation, basic knowledge of art history, lighting technique.
