The Furniture Installer I position exists to be responsible for the daily activities related to the installation of commercial office furniture, case goods, wall systems, seating, moving and related activities. Duties may include delivery, assembly, installation, repair, and service of furniture. Reports directly to the Building Manager, Occupancy Services.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Takes job-site direction to install systems furniture in a timely fashion
  • Unloads systems furniture orders from truck, delivers and stages product at the customer's site for installation
  • Completes furniture assembly/installation as per installation specifications and blueprints to meet customer's satisfaction; inspects furniture for proper operability according to manufacturer's guidelines
  • Installs all types of free-standing furniture, panel and modular systems including placement, leveling, wipe-down, and touch-up of metal and wood furniture at customer's location
  • Attends pre-installation meetings as required
  • Follows all safety procedures in the performance of job duties; observes and enforces local, state, and federal OSHA and D.O.T. safety rules and regulations
  • Follows safe work behaviors, and promptly corrects conditions and unsafe behaviors which may lead to accidents
  • May be required to unload incoming furniture trucks using material handling equipment (i.e., dollies, panel carts, pallet jack)
  • May be required to maintain an efficient three-day turn-around on all furniture repair service calls and complete all required furniture service/repair paperwork
  • Learns and uses unique industry standard code systems in performance of duties
  • Makes changes to existing workstations to meet individual user needs
  • Provides structured wiring support for data and voice communications for new installations or departmental moves per established IT/LAN standards
  • Transports and connects computer equipment, phones, and printers
  • Assists the electrician as needed; makes electrical connections within the furniture system
  • Assists in parts inventory for network cabling and modular furniture
  • Repairs damaged furniture and reupholsters panels as needed

Other Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Assists with general facility maintenance as needed
  • Assists with campus snow removal as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Working Environment/Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to pass a Post Offer Prehire Physical exam
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 100lbs
  • Must be able to push/pull up to 300lbs
  • Must be able to walk or stand 7 hours/day
  • Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push/pull, balance weight, and reach above head for extended periods of time
  • Requires repetitive tasks/motions, good eye-hand-foot coordination, good manual dexterity, and able to distinguish colors
  • Regularly operate material handling equipment that requires manual dexterity and use of lightweight tools requiring some coordinated movements
  • Exposure to various conditions such as dust, fumes, and temperature extremes
  • Frequently requires working around exposed electrical connections
  • Periodic moving of ceiling tile and building insulation

Personal Characteristics:
  • Must be detail oriented, dependable, self-motivated

Knowledge/Experience:
  • High school diploma
  • Trade school or equivalent in related field preferred
  • 1 to 2 years of experience as electrical or communications helper or modular furniture installation preferred
  • Basic understanding of construction drawings
  • Must be able to pass on-going testing in both network cabling and modular furniture requirements
  • Must be able to pass an IT qualification on category 6 cable installation and testing according to EIA/TIA standards

Skills, Abilities, and Special Talents/Gifts:
  • Good communication skills both verbal and written
  • Ability to read construction drawings and general material specifications
  • Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in verbal and written form
  • Ability to use diagnostic tools and test equipment for electrical and data cabling
  • Ability to follow directions and keep detailed, accurate records
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to work independently by following standard procedures
  • Ability to maintain a cool and calm demeanor under pressure
  • Ability to operate various construction trades hand and power tools
  • Excellent customer service skills, conducting customer contact in a professional and courteous manner
  • Must be able to distinguish between colors, especially red and green

Pay Range: $18.00 to $21.00/hr
