FULL-TIME FACULTY – BIOLOGY
OLIVE-HARVEY COLLEGE
The Biology Department of Olive-Harvey College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, seeks an innovative, collaborative instructor to teach biology courses effective Fall 2024.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teaches laboratory-based biology courses.
- Maintains highest possible standards of classroom instruction and laboratory safety; keeps up-to-date on new information and developments in the biological field.
- Utilizes technology and active learning strategies in the classroom.
- Participates in departmental meetings, curriculum, equity, and assessment work.
- Exhibits effective collaboration and establishes professional relationships with department members.
- Demonstrates excellence in teaching, commitment to integrating new technologies in the learning process, and the ability to inspire, motivate, and empower students to succeed.
- Creates an effective learning environment that fosters students’ intellectual curiosity and helps students to problem solve using discipline-specific thinking strategies.
- Develops curriculum and program planning. Employs a variety of formative and summative assessments to ensure that classroom instruction leads to student learning and the attainment of student learning outcomes for the course(s).
- Helps students reach their academic, personal, and career goals and cultivates a safe environment that respects the diversity of individuals and ideas by modeling respect for all students and conveying confidence in every student’s ability to learn.
- Adheres to City Colleges of Chicago board rules, policies, procedures, and code of ethics.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's Degree in Biology or related discipline required. Credentials in ecology, environmental biology, and organismal biology preferred.
- Demonstrated teaching competence in a variety of biology courses.
- Minimum one year of community college and/or university teaching experience required. Community college teaching experience preferred.
- Experience developing laboratory-based biology courses.
- Knowledge of a learning management system preferred.
- Experience with diverse, multi-lingual student population desired, as is a commitment to the open access mission of the community college.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with diverse students and staff.
- Must be able to teach in-person
