Pay Rate: $14.00 - $18.00 per hour (depending on experience)
Essential Duties:
- Assist in reducing fire risk by performing Fuel Reduction activities including but not limited to thinning fuel packages including logs, chunks, bark, branches, stumps, and broken understory trees or brush and creating and enhancing existing firebreaks.
- Educate citizens about defensible space in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI).
- Dispose of slash using chippers or other disposal means to reduce fire hazards.
- Maintain and report broken, unusable, or lost tools and equipment.
- As required, and under the close supervision of a squad boss or engine boss, perform wildland firefighting activities including creating fire lines using hand tools and chainsaws, extinguishing active fire with hoses.
- As required, drive fire vehicles over rough terrain to wildland sites.
- As needed, participate in, and meet the requirements of, prescribed fire burn plans.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Must be 18 years of age at the time of appointment.
- Requires completion of National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) training courses S-130, S-190, and L-180, or possession of a current Wildland Firefighter certification within one month of hire.
- Requires passing the NWCG Work Capacity Test (WCT) Arduous level within one month of hire.
- Preference may be given to candidates with wildland firefighting experience.
- Preference may be given to candidates with advanced wildland firefighting training and certifications.
Environment and Physical Conditions:
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors under emergency conditions which are arduous, usually dangerous, and possibly life-threatening. Conditions include but are not limited to: extreme heat conditions, extreme cold wind, snow, and ice, toxic chemicals, oxygen-deficient atmospheres, smoke, fire, explosive atmospheres and environments, water, heights, confined spaces, and others. Work is regularly performed on uneven, rocky, steep, and slippery terrain. Most tasks are performed outdoors. Indoor work may involve sitting for long time periods. Requires a high level of physical fitness, energy, stamina, mobility, balance, and eye-hand coordination including crawling, jumping, pulling, pushing, heavy lifting, running, and other physical activities, all of which must be done in a safe and timely manner. Managing physical and emotional stress is integral to the job. Must successfully pass the Fire Department's physical fitness tests including the Work Capacity Test for Wildland Firefighters at the arduous level within 1 month of hire.
Travel:
This position is subject to deployment and may travel to the Western United States during fire season for periods of up to 16 days.
Pre-employment Screening: Prior to appointment, applicant will be required to successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal. Applicants with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
