The Foster and Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for developing and maintaining an effective Foster and Volunteer program. Responsibilities will include recruitment, orientation, and training of new fosters and Volunteers. Developing a system for scheduling and coordinating volunteers to assist with meeting the organizational needs in coordination with the Kennel Supervisor and the Veterinarian. Recruits fosters and maintains the foster program in conjunction with the veterinary staff, ensuring that foster animals are scheduled for medical checkups, surgical procedures, and have a strategy for a positive outcome. Assist fosters and Volunteers using exceptional customer service skills.
In the absence of a manager, supervisor, or Lead Animal Welfare Coordinator the incumbent assumes limited responsibility for the activities of the kennel within established policies and procedures, performs daily care and handling tasks of impounded animals, required recordkeeping, and provides for the security, wellbeing, and humane treatment of the animals, including administering euthanasia.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Assists customers interested in volunteering by providing information regarding volunteer opportunities and programs, conducts volunteer orientation and training, and develops, schedules, and coordinates volunteer events, develops and maintains volunteer procedures and handbooks, and maintains close relationships with animal care teams to assist with Foster and Volunteers needs regarding animal care, and is responsible for providing appropriate placement of volunteers to assist the Department of Animal Welfare with animal care, foster care, transportation, building and grounds needs, and community outreach
Cares for animals by cleaning and disinfecting animal holding areas, maintaining facility aesthetics, feeding, watering, and grooming animals, monitoring the security of facilities, monitoring animals for illness, disease, and injuries, administering medications to animals, evaluating animals for adoption potential, socializing animals in custody, administering vaccines and oral dewormers, and performing euthanasia, when necessary
Performs administrative support functions by preparing and maintaining a variety of files, records, reports, agreements, logs, and other related information
Oversees the animal shelter volunteer and foster programs, under the direction of the Kennel Supervisor, Veterinarian, and/or Division Manager, by developing and managing the proper structure, procedures, and protocols of the programs
Assists the Lead Animal Welfare Coordinator in the process of transferring animals to partner organizations by assisting partner organizations with selecting animals available for transfers, scheduling pickup, ensuring that all the proper paperwork and medical procedures are complete and ready, and notifying any partners of special needs animals
Performs other duties as assigned
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Training and Experience:
High School Diploma or Equivalent (G.E.D.) and one year of experience in handling or training animals or six months of experience as a veterinary technician; or, a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.
Licenses and Certifications:
Must possess a valid driver’s license from state of residence
Must obtain a Florida Animal Control Association Euthanasia certification within a year
Successful completion of Escambia County Animal Welfare Training program
Successful completion of Escambia County Animal Welfare Customer Service Training program
Preferred Qualifications:
Two years of experience in handling or training animals or one year of experience as a veterinary technician

Emergency Management Responsibilities:
During emergency conditions, the incumbent of this position will automatically be considered an emergency service worker. Physical Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require running, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, finger and hand dexterity as well as repetitive motions.
Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Lifting in excess of 100lbs. May engage in aerobic exertion when training and working with animals. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.
