Who we are and what we do:

The Tennessee Division of Forestry (TDF) celebrated its centennial anniversary in 2014. One of the Division's first missions was to plant trees on eroded and abandoned farmland in the western part of the state. Over the decades, TDF has grown to protect, conserve, and enhance Tennessee's 14 million acres of forestland through forest health protection, rural and urban forest management, wildfire and prescribed fire management, water quality protection, forest business services, state forest management and conservation education. Today, TDF employs over 400 personnel statewide and is well known as the wildfire and forest health experts. The Division resides within the Tennessee Department of Agriculture whose mission is to promote wise uses of Tennessee's agricultural and forest resources, to develop economic opportunities, and to ensure safe and dependable food, fuel, and fiber for all citizens.

How you make a difference in this role:

The Communications and Outreach Unit Leader works for the State Forester to communicate clear and accurate information to further the division's mission. This Unit Leader strives to inform and educate external and internal audiences by providing them a better understanding of forestry as a discipline and the role the division plays in maintaining a healthy and productive forest resource.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Publicize the roles, activities, and accomplishments of the division by developing, administering, and executing internal and external communication strategies that help to inform and educate multiple audiences.
  • Work closely with Public Affairs, particularly for media response and emergency Communications.
  • Serve as the primary spokesperson and media contact for TV, radio, and print media.
  • Maintain and promote the Division of Forestry as a reliable, credible source of forestry information on current affairs and issues to the media, partners, and the public at-large.
  • Effectively utilize media platforms to reach general and targeted audiences
  • Websites, social media, print publications, promotional items, press releases, ads.
  • Assist field staff with providing outreach on conservation principles and ethics in various areas of influence to targeted audiences as natural resource professionals and subject matter experts.
  • Engage and educate youth on conservation, forest biology, silvicultural practices, forest health, forest industry, wildland fire prevention and suppression, and other related topics.
  • Serve as Director of Tennessee Forestry Camp. -Supervise outreach content manager who oversees publications, social media, and manages graphic and written content libraries.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelors degree in forestry and experience equivalent to five years of professional forestry work, three of which must involve supervisory or program management experience.

Substitution of Education for Experience:

Additional qualifying graduate course work in forestry may substitute for the required experience, on a year for year basis, to a maximum of one year (e.g., 36 graduate quarter hours in forestry may substitute for one year of the required experience).
