This is a grant funded time-limited (GFTL) position. This means it is a position that is paid entirely as the result of a grant. The duration of employment shall not exceed the life of the grant that funds the position. An employee appointed to a GFTL position is required to meet the minimum requirements for the classification. Further, an employee appointed to a GFTL position is designated as an unclassified (non-merit) employee. A GFTL employee is eligible to receive benefits at the same level as a classified (merit) employee in a permanent position.
By joining the Division of Forestry/Madisonville Branch as a Forest Ranger Technician III in Hopkins County, you will have the opportunity to significantly contribute to ensuring the programmatic integrity of numerous forestry-related programs, and the consistent delivery of services to the public. During the performance of your assigned duties, you will interact on a daily/weekly basis with not only the public, but with branch personnel, branch management, and the division's program staff.
Holders of the Forest Ranger Technician III position will complete tasks such as:
  • Serves as an expert in the protection of forests through implementation of forest health management activities.
  • Observes, collects, and analyzes information on forest health damages through aerial and ground surveys.
  • Develops and presents forest health related education programs.
  • Serves as an expert in the management of urban forests.
  • Observes, collects, and analyzes information on urban forests through tree canopy assessments.
  • Serves as an expert in the protection of forests through fire prevention.
  • Performs forest fire prevention activities through Firewise Community assessments and establishment of Firewise Community Wildfire Protection Plans.
  • Assists with recommendation and implementation practices for the enhancement of forests through forest stewardship plans and practice plans.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in the natural, biological, or physical sciences.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have four years of forest management or forest protection experience.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: A bachelor's degree in the natural, biological, or physical sciences supplemented by two years of forest management experience will substitute for the associate's degree and the four years of forest management or forest protection experience.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Forest management experience will substitute for the associate's degree on the basis of two years of experience for one year of education, OR four years of experience in the Forest Ranger Technician series will substitute for the associate's degree and the four years of forest management or forest protection experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be at least 21 years of age. Must possess a valid driver's license prior to appointment in this job classification.
Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Work is typically performed outdoors on private forest lands. Work can be under adverse conditions due to weather, topography, or when suppressing wild land fires. Adverse conditions could be present when assisting in all-risk emergency response when mobilized.
Work also involves frequent contact with citizens and organizations in the promotion of forestry programs. Duties are typically performed within the Commonwealth of Kentucky; however, some functions may occur in other states.
