Perform a variety of analysis on bullets, cartridge casings, Firearms and other related physical evidence. Prepare awritten analysis of the findings and present the findings in court.

Job Description

Overview
The Forensics Firearms and Toolmark Examiner performs and provides a variety of analysis on bullets, cartridge casings, firearms, and other related physical evidence for crime scenes and cases.
Prepares a written analysis of the findings and presents the findings in court.
Essential Functions
1 Examines, evaluates, checks, and renders all firearm and related physical evidence safe for handling.
2 Checks, examines, and evaluates in detail to determine if firearms can safely fire projectiles; clearly tags and marks evidence item as “safe to fire” or “not safe to fire”.
3 Prepares the firearm, cartridge casing, bullets, and other related evidence; properly identifies, tracks, and logs evidence for safe keeping.
4 Processes identifying marks or numbers which have been removed through restoration by a chemical etching process and identifying marks or numbers which have been removed.
5 Tests by firing firearms into a water tank, retrieving the projectile and cartridge case, and tagging the evidence with evidence item number; classifies, matches, and identifies a variety of firearms, weapons, cartridges, bullets, and similar ballistic evidence
6 Enters the test fired projectiles and cartridges in the Integrated Ballistic Information System (IBIS) machine along with necessary data fields assigned.
7 Utilizes the IBIS to query data bases and identify potential likely match to previously entered firearms exhibits; examines likely matches; perform hands on comparison of projectiles and cartridges to assess whether they are likely produced by the same firearm.
8 Examines evidence items for unique or indicative toolmarks using magnification and photographic techniques; captures still images utilizing digital photographic equipment.
9 Documents examination results and findings in a standard Firearms and Toolmark examination report.
10 Testifies in court presenting clear, concise, and accurate report of findings.
11 Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
1 In-depth knowledge as a Forensic Firearms and Tool mark Examiner.
2 Knowledge of natural sciences, forensic sciences, criminalistics or a closely related field in forensic examination.
3 Knowledge of the advanced principles of forensic science.
4 Knowledge of the principals and practices of a firearms toolmarks examiner.
5 Ability to gather findings and report accurately and clearly.
6 Ability to give expert court testimony.
7 Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
8 Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor's degree in chemical, physical, biological sciences, engineering, or forensic science from an accredited university.

EXPERIENCE:
  • Four (4) years of professional level experience in conducting forensic firearm and Toolmark comparisons which include testifying as an expert witness.

EQUIVALENCIES:
  • A master's degree or higher in a specified field plus two (2) years of the required experience will meet the education and experience requirements.

LICENSE:
  • Valid driver's license with good driving record.
  • Must have or obtain a Forensic Analyst license from the Texas Forensic Science Commission (TFSC) within probationary period.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must pass an intensive background investigation and drug test.
  • No FELONY or Class A MISDEMEANOR convictions.
  • No Class B MISDEMEANOR convictions within the last ten (10) years.
  • No family violence convictions.
  • Cannot currently be on deferred adjudication for any FELONY, Class A, or Class B MISDEMEANOR.

PREFERENCES:
  • Certification in the area of Firearm Evidence Examination and Identification through the Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners (AFTE) is preferred.
  • Certification from the IBIS Brasstrax-3D training course provided by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is preferred.
