JOB DESCRIPTION

CLASSIFICATION: Food Service Director

POSITION TITLE: Food Service Director

Immediate Supervisor: Superintendent or Designated Administrator

JOB SUMMARY: The Food Service Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of Food Service operations within the school district. This includes meal planning, preparation, compliance with USDA regulations, staff supervision, inventory management, equipment maintenance, management of the Food Service budget, and ensuring adherence to health and safety standards.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree in Nutrition, Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management, or related field preferred.

• High School Graduate or equivalent required, with additional courses in food preparation, nutrition, and management.

• Prior experience in Food Service management, preferably in an educational setting.

• Comprehensive knowledge of food handling and storage procedures, inventory management, meal planning, and USDA regulations.

• Strong leadership and organizational skills with the ability to effectively supervise and motivate kitchen staff.

• Proficiency in implementing health and safety regulations, modeling proper hygiene practices, and ensuring a sanitary work environment.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities for coordinating with staff, administrators, and vendors.

• Ability to plan menus that meet USDA guidelines, accommodate dietary restrictions, and appeal to students.

WORKING CONDITIONS: May involve heavy lifting and standing for extended periods.

EQUIPMENT OPERATION: Familiarity with large and small kitchen equipment including mixers, ovens, steam kettles, and slicers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

DAILY

• Plan, coordinate, and oversee the preparation and serving of nutritious meals in compliance with USDA regulations.

• Supervise kitchen staff in meal preparation, serving, and cleanup, ensuring efficiency and adherence to safety standards.

• Monitor and maintain inventory levels of food and supplies, placing orders as needed.

• Conduct regular inspections of kitchen equipment and facilities, ensuring proper functioning and cleanliness.

• Maintain accurate records of daily meal counts, inventory, and other required documentation.

WEEKLY

• Receive and inspect food and supply shipments to verify quantity, quality, and adherence to specifications.

• Develop weekly work schedules for Food Service employees, assigning tasks as needed.

• Review and adjust ala-carte menu offerings and pricing as necessary.

MONTHLY

• Complete government forms related to meal service and evaluation, ensuring compliance with reporting requirements.

• Create and distribute monthly menus to students, staff, and administrators.

• Review and submit employee time sheets for payroll processing.

• Conduct inventory audits and place orders for necessary supplies.

QUARTERLY

• Attend professional development workshops, conferences, and meetings to stay current on industry trends and regulations.

• Conduct performance evaluations of kitchen staff, providing feedback and identifying areas for improvement.

LESS FREQUENTLY

• Participate in the hiring process by interviewing and selecting new employees.

• Plan and prepare meals for special events, meetings, and banquets, as requested by school administration.
