METROPOLITAN KNOXVILLE AIRPORT AUTHORITY
The Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority (MKAA) was established in 1978 as a nonprofit agency to own and operate the city's aviation system, McGhee Tyson Airport and Downtown Island Airport, and has recently celebrated a full 85 years in service to the East Tennessee area. Being centrally located within a one day's drive or a few hours flight from major cities, MKAA continues to be integral to the air transportation system. The Position
As a part of the Operations Department, the Fleet Mechanic is responsible for preventative maintenance and repair of all authority-owned and leased mobile and fixed equipment, including but not limited to, passenger vehicles; light, medium and heavy-duty trucks and trailers; on and off-road construction and specialty equipment; commercial mowing equipment; small engines; mechanical, hydrostatic and pneumatic power transmission systems; firefighting equipment, pavement maintenance and repair equipment. Orders and secures parts, operates a variety of tools and equipment, coordinates appointments, and out-of-service time with departments.
Responsibilities
- Performs preventative maintenance on heavy equipment, automobiles, small equipment and lawn care equipment. Monitors for imperfections in wiring and hoses, metal cracks, fluid leaks, etc.
- Prepares heavy equipment for winter operations, and prepares and maintains equipment used for seasonal mowing.
- Conducts hands-on quality control of the work activities performed by personnel within the fleet maintenance and repair facility to ensure work is completed to provide top-level performance of all airport fleet assets.
- Stays current on latest technological advances through training and development; trains other team members in small engine repairs, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Participates in obtaining quotes for new work vehicles and equipment. Orders parts and maintains inventory.
- Maintains and cleans the shop and work areas. Operates cleaning equipment and appropriately handles clean-up of any spills.
- Removes parts such as engines, transmissions, and differentials from vehicles and equipment in order to make repairs or perform inspections.
- Performs onsite repairs and maintenance for the fleet assets of the Downtown Island airport in Knoxville.
- Responds to on-call service requests in the field and determines in advance the tools, equipment, and materials needed to complete the repairs efficiently and in a timely manner.
- Performs related work as required.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for this position will have a high school degree or equivalent and 3 to 5 years' experience in the preventative maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment, including experience with gasoline and/or diesel engines, associated electrical systems, as well as the ability to interpret electrical schematics. Automotive Service Excellence certification and a commercial driver's license (CDL) is preferred. This candidate must be attentive to detail with the ability to solve problems; effective with oral and written communication; be able to teach others and share knowledge; have the ability to read and understand reference books, schematics, and diagrams to assist in the disassembly of engines, transmission, and differentials, for the purpose of repairs and inspections; be able to operate equipment and determine appropriate cleaning chemicals for various surfaces and applications; maintain records and documentation. Knowledge of preventative maintenance and repair practices, fleet vehicles and equipment, mechanics and electrical systems, gasoline and diesel engines, safe work practices, cleaning equipment and associated chemicals and solvents, is a plus.
Salary and Compensation
The hiring range for this position is $47,628.66 to $61,917.26. MKAA offers a very competitive benefits package for this position, including medical/dental/vision benefits, disability/life insurance, vacation leave, sick leave, and a 401(a)-retirement program.
