Job Title:               Flagger Helper, Bowman Gray Stadium

SUMMARY:

The Flagger Helper plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe and fair conduct of races by communicating with drivers using signal flags, promoting adherence to racing rules, and promptly responding to track conditions and incidents.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Use signal flags to communicate essential information to drivers during races, including track conditions, cautions, penalties, and race status, in accordance with established racing regulations and protocols.
  • Maintain constant vigilance over track conditions and race progress, promptly identifying any hazards, incidents, or infractions that may jeopardize the safety of drivers, officials, or spectators.
  • Coordinate with race control and other officials to facilitate smooth and orderly starts, restarts, and pace laps, ensuring that all drivers are positioned correctly and ready for the green flag.
  • React swiftly to on-track incidents, accidents, or debris, displaying appropriate flags to warn drivers, guide them safely around obstacles, and signal track workers to respond as necessary.
  • Enforce racing rules and regulations consistently and impartially, issuing penalties or warnings to drivers who violate track boundaries, engage in unsportsmanlike conduct, or commit other infractions during races.
  • Maintain clear and effective communication with race control, other Flaggers, track personnel, and emergency services as needed, providing timely updates and coordinating responses to emergent situations.
  • Keep accurate records of flag signals used, incidents reported, penalties assessed, and any other relevant information pertaining to race events, contributing to post-race debriefings and incident reviews.
  • Ensure that flagging equipment, including signal flags, flag stands, radios, and communication devices, is properly maintained, functional, and readily accessible at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); previous experience flagging race events; thorough knowledge of race terminology, rules, strategies, and procedures; or one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Must be able to read a tape measure.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Driver license

OTHER SKILLS

  • Comprehensive understanding of racing terminology, rules, procedures, and strategies.
  • The capacity to think quickly adapt to rapidly changing situations and maintain composure under pressure during live events.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively.
  • Ability to work outdoors in changing weather conditions.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, in alignment with the race schedule and event calendar.
  • Dependable and punctual, with a commitment to fulfilling assigned shifts and responsibilities according to the race schedule and event calendar.
