Job Description
Lynker Corporation is seeking to hire a Fisheries Laboratory Technician to support NOAA Fisheries' Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) Resource Assessment and Conservation Engineering (RACE) Division. This is a part-time, temporary position based at the AFSC Newport Laboratory in Newport, Oregon and will begin as soon as possible.
The AFSC RACE Fisheries Behavioral Ecology Program examines the functional responses of Alaska marine fishes to environmental, climate, and habitat conditions with laboratory experimentation and field collections. Experiments examine the responses of fish to temperature, pH, feeding conditions, habitat variation, and pollutants. Activities will include the laboratory culture of larval, juvenile, and adult fishes and their prey. Experimental activities will include monitoring of experimental conditions, fish measurements, feeding, tank maintenance, and record keeping.
Specifically, tasks for this position will include supporting laboratory studies of environmental influences on Alaska fishes:
Experimental culture of Alaska fishes -
Culture Alaskan marine fishes and their prey in an experimental setting.
Provide records of experimental conditions in culture tanks.
Biological sampling of animals from experimental culture -
Collect biological data on samples from animals in experimental culture, including body size metrics.
Preserve biological specimens for archiving and subsequent analysis.
Collection of experimental data -
Produce data summary tables for analysis.
Additionally, the candidate will provide a monthly progress report describing all work performed for the previous month as well as anticipated tasks for the upcoming month.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree, or higher, from an accredited college or university with a major directly related in a field of study as related to the requirements of specific task order with emphasis in fisheries, oceanography, social science, natural science, mathematics, or hydrology
OR
One (1) year of specialized training or direct experience related to the requirements of specific task order including the culture of marine fishes or invertebrates and their prey, and designing and constructing seawater culture systems. Demonstrated experience in the culture of marine fishes or invertebrates.
Additional required qualifications include:
Demonstrated training or experience in the culture of marine fishes or invertebrates.
Experience or training designing and constructing seawater culture systems.
Demonstrated experience in laboratory experimentation related to the behavioral or physiological ecology of fishes.
Ability to produce data tables.
The selected candidate for this position will work up to 29 hours per week at the AFSC Newport Laboratory in Newport, OR. The facility is generally open from 7 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday with the exception of federal holidays. However, there may be occasions when the candidate may be required to work other than normal business hours, including weekends and holidays, to fulfill required tasks as described above.
