Job description

Position: Firefighter (Paramedic)

Department: 123

Reports to: Fire Lieutenant

Characters of the Class: Under close supervision, performs EMS, firefighting, fire prevention and operating duties and does related work as required.

Examples of Duties: Responds to fire alarms and EMS calls. Lays out and connects hoses. Holds nozzles and directs water streams. Raises and climbs ladders. Uses chemical extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines and other equipment. Removes persons from danger; administers first aid to injured persons. Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water and removing debris. Participates in fire drills and attends training in firefighting, first aid and related subjects. Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire department property; cleans and washes walls, windows and floors; makes minor repairs, washes, hangs and dries hose; washes cleans and polishes apparatus fire and EMS. On assignment may participate in one of several trades in maintaining, remodeling, and construction, altering or repairing buildings, grounds, facilities and equipment. Responds to public service calls. Conducts tours of station and assist in public relations.

Minimum Qualifications

Training and Experience: Graduation from an accredited high school or its equivalent (GED). Must have a current Commonwealth of Kentucky Paramedic certification. Must have completed and valid Kentucky Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT). Must have a valid vehicle operator's license issued by the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Special Necessary Requirement: Completion of all required annual fire and EMS training.

Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Some knowledge of the street and physical layout of the city. Working knowledge of firefighting and EMS principles and techniques. Fitness and the ability to perform arduous tasks under adverse conditions. Ability to perform the mechanical work involved in operating and maintaining firefighting and EMS apparatus, equipment and tools. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with superior, other employees and the public. Alertness. Dependability. Integrity.

  • Could wear personal protective equipment that weighs in excess of 75 pounds.
  • Make rapid transitions from rest to near maximal exertion without warm-up period.
  • Works for long periods of time, requiring sustained physical activity and intense concentration.
  • Rely on senses of sight, hearing, smell and touch to help determine the nature of the emergency, maintain personal safety and make critical decisions in a confused, chaotic and potentially life-threatening environment.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 175 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move greater than 175 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed primarily in office, vehicles, and outdoor settings, in all weather conditions, including temperature extremes, during day and night shifts. Work is often performed in emergency and stressful situations. Individual is exposed to hearing alarms and hazards associated with emergency scenes, including noxious odors, fumes, chemicals and smoke.

The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in office settings, and loud at an emergency scene.

Spends extensive time exposed to severe and inclement weather conditions including extreme fluctuations of temperature, and performing tasks in wet, icy, muddy, and on unlevel terrain.

Operates in environments of high noise, poor visibility, and limited mobility at heights and in closed in spaces due to nature of emergency and weather conditions.
