In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. To qualify at the GS-05 grade level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Must have 1) AND EITHER 2) OR 3): 1) Control or extinguish fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer or governmental fire department or brigade, 2) Performs or assists with rescue operations. 3) Responds to basic hazardous materials incidents. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
Education: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages.
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess Firefighter II, HAZMAT Operations certifications certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M.
Prior to promotion to the GS-06 grade level, incumbent must obtain and then continue to maintain the following DoD, IFSAC or ProBoard Firefighter Certification levels:
Airport Firefighter
Driver/Operator - Pumper
Driver/Operator - Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF)
Driver/Operator - Mobile Water Supply (MWS)
To qualify at the GS-06 grade level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Must have 1) AND EITHER 2) OR 3): 1) Controls and extinguishes fires. 2) Operates emergency vehicles under adverse weather and/or traffic conditions. 3) Participates as a member of a crew to contain or control hazardous materials incidents. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess Firefighter II, HAZMAT Operations, Airport Firefighter, Driver/Operator - Pumper, Driver/Operator - Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF), Driver/Operator - Mobile Water Supply (MWS) certifications certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M.
Prior to promotion to the full performance GS-07 level, the incumbent must obtain and then continue to maintain the following DoD, IFSAC or ProBoard Firefighter certification levels and listed EMT certification:
HAZMAT Technician
Emergency Medical Technician (National Registry or State Certified)
Wildland Firefighter - in accordance with the National Wildfire Coordination Group (NWCG) Standards
To qualify at the GS-07 grade level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Must have 1) AND 2) AND TWO OF THE FOLLOWING 3) THROUGH 6): 1) Controls and extinguishes fires. 2) Operates emergency vehicles under adverse weather and/or traffic conditions. 3) Performs rescue operations/provides prompt and efficient patient care. 4) Detects, reduces, or eliminates potential fire hazards. 5) Controls hazardous materials incidents. 6) Develops, implements, or provides training in fire protection and prevention. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess Firefighter II, Airport Firefighter, HAZMAT Technician (includes Hazmat Operations), Driver/Operator - Pumper, Driver/Operator - Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF), Driver/Operator - Mobile Water Supply (MWS), Wildland Firefighter IAW National Wildfire Coordination Group (NWCG) Standards certifications certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M AND a State or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Certification Card indicating a future expiration date. (NOTE: If EMT certification is from any state other than Alaska, it will only be accepted from states affiliated with National Registry.)
NOTE: Based on unique local mission requirements, applicants not holding Driver/Operator - Mobile Water Supply (MWS) and/or Wildland Firefighter may be selected at this grade but must obtain these certifications within 12 months of being hired.
You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:
- Emergency Medical Care
- Fire Suppression
- Hazardous Materials Response
- Preventative Maintenance
GS-06 level: No education substitution.
GS-07 level: No education substitution.
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
