Job description

Position Summary

The Bozeman Fire Department is now accepting applications for Firefighters who will respond to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials, and other emergency and non-emergency situations. The department has an established professional development plan that allows for continued growth, training, and certification, including the obtaining of a paramedic license.

Fair Labor Standards Act Status: Non-Exempt
Work Week: 48/96 Rotation after completion of a 10-week Firefighter Academy which is a 4 - 10 schedule.
Anticipated Start Date: August 2024.
Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

  • Responds to fire alarms, and implements necessary fire suppression techniques to protect life and property, including structures, vehicles, and wild land or industrial areas;
  • Assumes a designated position on an assigned fire apparatus and follows command structure instructions for fire suppression or related emergency services;
  • Serves within a command structure requiring adherence to officers' orders in life threatening situations;
  • Operates related Department vehicles, apparatus, and equipment as required, including cars, trucks, fire apparatus, hand tools, power tools, chain saws, ladders, hoses, emergency medical service equipment, self-contained breathing apparatus, hydrants, generators, and other related tools and equipment;
  • Responds to structural fire calls, and performs appropriate search and rescue operations, including administration of basic medical treatment as necessary;
  • Performs salvage duties at fire scenes by placing salvage covers, sweeping, vacuuming water, and removing debris;
  • Responds to EMS alarms involving people in need of medical care from fire and rescue situations, including providing basic medical care, and facilitates transportation of victims to appropriate medical facility as appropriate;
  • Responds to a variety of fire alarms and follows established investigative procedures;
  • Performs inspections of homes, businesses, schools, daycare centers, and other private and public institutions to ensure compliance with Uniform Fire Code and other applicable Building Codes as required;
  • Acts as a liaison between the Fire Department and the news media, local organizations, schools, and the general public to ensure effective working relationships and positive public relations, including working with local schools and other civic organizations to educate the general public on fire safety issues;
  • Operates and maintains fire vehicles, apparatus, and equipment in a clean and operable condition to ensure operational readiness for future response calls, including performing scheduled daily, weekly, and monthly checks;
  • Completes equipment inventories as required;
  • Ensures the use of appropriate fire-fighting safety apparel and equipment, and follows appropriate safety procedures as required;
  • Works closely with other emergency medical staff, public safety, and fire personnel from other agencies, depending upon response situation;
  • Responds to hazardous materials emergencies, including scene assessment, identifying the extent of damage and/or potential hazard to the community, implementing containment plans, and protecting fire personnel and civilians from exposure to chemicals;
  • Responds to man-made and natural disasters, such as fires, floods, earthquakes, crash rescues or other catastrophic events, and provides medical assistance as required;
  • Maintains an awareness of other Fire personnel on detail for the purpose of protecting other Firefighters' lives as necessary;
  • Participates in fire drills;
  • Makes verbal and written analyses of activities involved in any fire emergency situation;
  • Performs all necessary training activities as assigned and in accordance with readiness and preparation for firefighting activities, including participation in classes developed to increase and maintain skills, field development courses and training, first aid training, CPR, rescue techniques, and continuing education classes;
  • Performs physical fitness training to maintain physical abilities necessary for firefighting;
  • Maintains station and personal living areas in a clean and orderly manner, including maintaining grounds as required;
  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions;
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;
  • Responds to citizens' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
  • Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Probationary Firefighter:


  • High School Diploma or GED; and
  • Possession of a valid CPAT completed within the last 12 months; and
  • Possession of a Montana EMT-B or NREMT-B (or equivalent or better) Certification.
  • Must satisfactorily complete an extensive background, driving, credit, reference check, and a psychological evaluation;
  • Medical evaluation and certification required.
  • Successful completion of 10 week recruit firefighter academy
  • Complete probationary firefighter task book

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Substantial knowledge of the principles and practices of fire science;
  • Substantial knowledge of elementary physics, chemistry, and mechanics in relation to elements of fire and fire suppression.
  • Substantial knowledge of the principles, practices, procedures, equipment, and apparatuses used in firefighting, chemical and hazardous materials, rescue, and various other emergency responses;
  • Substantial knowledge of the geography of the City, including locations of streets, hydrants, sprinkler and standpipe hookups, alarm panels, and Knox Box locations;
  • Ability to quickly learn the Fire Department's operational policies and procedures;
  • Ability to quickly learn related City policies and procedures;
  • Ability to respond to fire alarms in a safe and prompt manner;
  • Ability to provide proper and effective rescue operations, fire suppression, and emergency medical services;
  • Ability to perform safe and effective fire prevention inspections;
  • Ability to provide effective fire safety and awareness programs to local schools and civic organizations;
  • Ability to effectively function as a team member working under the leadership of a command officer;
  • Ability to effectively function in the job immediately below his/her present level, at his/her present level, and at the next level above his/her present assignment;
  • Ability to efficiently operate and maintain fire suppression equipment, supplies, and vehicles;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the Fire Chief and other Fire Department personnel, other City employees, area businesses, civic and community organizations, and the general public;
  • Ability to perform a wide range of difficult technical tasks with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines and emergency situations;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions;
  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;
  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
