This advertisement is being used to generate a potential hiring list for anticipated future vacancies (within a six-month period from the advertisement closing date) for both full-time and part-time statuses.
HFD operates in a team environment with a mission to enhance the quality of life for the community by protecting their health, safety, and welfare through fire suppression, emergency medical services, prevention, and public education. The preferred hiring range for this position is $18.63 - $20.03 per hour, equivalent to $51,344 - $55,202 annually for full-time positions.
Applicants may be considered for the Firefighter level at which they qualify and a corresponding annual rate commensurate with applicant qualifications.
Minimum Qualifications
All Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for a Firefighter position:
- At least 18 years of age by date of hire,
- High School Diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, and
- Valid Driver's License.
For candidates with partial or no certifications:
- Successful completion (both the written test and physical agility test) of the Regional Firefighter Testing is required. No prior certification or training as a firefighter or EMT is required to apply; however, an original, valid Regional Firefighter testing certificate must be submitted with the City application to be considered for an available position.
- Virginia Firefighter II, EMT, and Hazardous Materials Operations, or a VA-recognized equivalency, are required.

- If hired, the individual must successfully complete the Regional Firefighter Testing's physical agility test at the next scheduled test date, but no later than 12 months from hire date.
- Applicants offered a position with the department who do not hold required certifications will be required to successfully complete the Regional Career Academy as a condition of employment. Candidates assigned to the Academy will be compensated as general employees (with benefits if in a full-time status) at a rate commensurate with their qualifications and may have their salary adjusted upon graduation and assignment in the Department.
- All uniformed personnel in the Department must become a released Engine Driver/Operator and be proficiently advanced to a Firefighter II position in accordance with the corresponding position description within one year of assignment to the Suppression Division, or as deemed appropriate by the department.
- Successful applicants for this position will be subject to the following screenings and must receive satisfactory results:
- DMV record review;
- Criminal background check;
- Medical evaluation;
- Drug screening; and
- Personal History Statement.
