Firefighter - Benton
SUMMARY:
Participates in fire suppression, emergency medical, and rescue activities and provides support maintenance by performing the following duties. (FLSA Non-Exempt)
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
Other related duties may be assigned. Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.
  • Responds to emergency medical and rescue alarms: provides emergency medical treatment; participates in search and rescue and extrication operations; operates equipment; reloads equipment on apparatus.
  • Responds to fire alarms: couples, rolls, folds, reels, and unreels hose; lays and connects hose lines and connects nozzles, valves, and fittings; operates hydrants; directs water/fog streams; carries, places, climbs, raises, and lowers ladders; makes forcible entries; ventilates; participates in search and rescue and evacuation operations; provides emergency medical treatment; participates in salvage and overhaul tasks; participates in investigation to determine cause and origin of fire; reloads hose and/or equipment on apparatus.
  • Inspects and maintains: inspects, cleans, and maintains in proper working condition all assigned equipment; inspects, cleans, and assists in maintaining apparatus; loads hose and/or equipment on apparatus; tests hose and couplings; cleans fire station and grounds; displays and handles flags; makes minor repairs to tools, equipment, and/or station.
  • Keeps records and prepares reports: enters training and hose records in computer program; reports to the Captain any repairs, needed and made, to facilities, apparatus, and equipment; reports any recognized violations of fire codes and ordinances by citizens of the City.
  • Makes company fire surveys: identifies common, special, structural, and panic hazards; inspects building construction for fire control characteristics; inspects refrigeration, ventilation, and heating systems; inspects storage, handling, and transportation of flammable liquids and gases and other hazardous materials; inspects and tests hydrants and/or other water sources.
  • Performs miscellaneous administrative duties: relieves for Engineer; participates in fire Prevention programs; testifies in court; assists with entry level and promotional tests.
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY:The complexity, guidelines, supervisory controls, and supervision responsibilities described below are representative of this position.
  • Tasks involve related steps. The employee carries out detailed, but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Specific guidelines are available. The employee uses initiative in selecting appropriate guidelines and carrying out recurring assignments.
  • The supervisor makes specific assignments and authorization is needed for any deviation from original instructions. The supervisor closely controls and reviews most work.
  • The employee does not supervise any employees.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports. Ability to communicate effectively with citizens, Fire Department personnel, and other employees of the City.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to calculate percent, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
COMPUTER SKILL:
Basic skill in the use of PTS Fire program.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of the operation of all related equipment. Thorough knowledge of hydrant, sprinkler, standpipe, major structure, and street locations and pre-fire plans. General knowledge of proper radio procedures. Ability to work under very stressful conditions for extended periods of time if necessary.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; to walk at a fast pace; to sit at a desk or in a vehicle; to quickly exit a vehicle; to handle, hold, or manipulate firefighting equipment and tools, paper, pens, telephone, radio, keyboard, etc.; to reach across a desk or to assist at a fire or rescue scene; to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl while participating in fire suppression or rescue activities; to bend or twist the body to handle hoses or other equipment; to detect odors using the sense of smell while participating in fire suppression activities; to talk with or hear persons by telephone, radio, or in person, often under very adverse conditions; and to carry a victim on a stretcher, gurney, or backboard.
  • The employee is frequently required to operate a vehicle; to climb several flights of stairs; to crawl across horizontal surfaces; to wear a breathing apparatus; to lift and carry incapacitated or non-resisting persons; to drag or push debris or other heavy objects other than persons; to pull charged hose more than 100 feet; to carry portable equipment more than 50 feet; to lift and/or move heavy objects other than persons, tools, hose, or equipment; and to carry or raise a 14 foot or larger ladder.
  • The employee is occasionally required to carry hose packs; to lift a hose pack to head level or higher; to climb over walls, fences, or other barriers; to use hand tools to chop or pry; to use power tools for cutting; to pull dry hose more than 200 feet; to pull charged hose up a ladder; and to perform CPR.
  • On rare occasions the employee is required to drag incapacitated or nonresisting persons.
  • The employee is occasionally required to pull dry hose up a ladder; to pull charged hose more than 100 feet; and to carry or raise a 14 foot or larger ladder without assistance.
  • On rare occasions the employee is required to carry a victim on a stretcher, gurney, or backboard; to lift and carry incapacitated or non-resisting persons; to pull charged hose up a ladder; and to perform CPR without assistance.
  • Specific vision requirements include close vision for paper work, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, color vision to detect hazardous materials, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The noise level in the work environment is moderately quiet during nonemergency periods to very loud during emergency situations. The duties of the employee involve the responsibility for the safety and well-being of citizens of the City and involve tasks, which may pose a risk to the safety of the employee.
The employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee frequently works outside in adverse weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock. On rare occasions the employee may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, to risk of explosives, and to radiation.
DRIVING REQUIREMENTS:
The employee may be required to drive or operate the following vehicles or equipment. A valid class D driver's license and a good driving record are required.

The Arkansas Division of Workforce Services (ADWS) is the state agency responsible for providing job-related services to unemployed state residents, such as coordinating training and educational opportunities, processing unemployment insurance claims, and connecting job seekers with employment opportunities in the state.
