Fire Technician
Position Overview
Technician to provide service, inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair for fire equipment which typically includes but is not limited to portable and semi-portable fire extinguishers, lifesaving equipment, fire and gas detection systems, foam systems, dry chemical systems, gaseous suppression systems and water- based fire protection systems.
Qualifications
Must have a valid driver’s license from state of residence and valid proof of vehicle insurance;
Must possess safe driving record and be insurable for United Safety vehicle insurance while driving company truck;
Must be willing to travel to customer’s site and available for travel for short and long-term out-of-town;
Must be able to obtain TWIC card and pass any required safety testing to include classes such as Basic Plus, OSHA 10 hour, etc;
Have or obtain an applicable State Fire Licenses (if required by State) or pass NICET Level II testing (if State Licensing not required) for appropriate areas of service within 12 months of hire date;
Demonstrated ability to operate electronic safety equipment and understand fire systems and components;
Knowledge of all regulatory standards pertaining to assigned responsibilities, i.e., State, OSHA, and NFPA regulations, etc;
Must have knowledge of the applicable Code of Federal Regulations;
Trained in Respiratory Protection and fully certified to wear respiratory breathing equipment (Fit Tested) where required by facility;
Must demonstrate ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily;
High School diploma or GED and at least one (1) year of field experience in fire protection, petrochemical, oil refinery or related industry
Job description
Candidates shall meet the following minimum requirements:
· Fire Extinguisher License – Type B (FEL-B)
· Fire Alarm License (FAL)
· Should have the knowledge and skills needed to work independently
· Under limited supervision of a qualified technician, they perform routine job tasks such as visual inspections, annual maintenance, internal examinations, and assist in hydrostatic testing
· They can review drawings, specifications, codes, and standards
· They may conduct basic installation activities, perform basic troubleshooting, and prepare technical or offering documents
· Should have at least 12 months of technical experience in Fire Alarm Systems and/or Fire Extinguisher services
Fire Extinguisher skills:
· Safety
o Inspect and maintain tools and equipment
o Wear and maintain proper PPE
o Recognize safety hazards
o Understand body positioning and proper lifting techniques
o Purpose of MSDS
o Basic first aid procedures
o Understand basic OSHA safety regulations
o Recognize dangers associated with specific agent types
o Implement mitigation strategies for workplace hazards
o Verify proper use and maintenance of tools
· Identify Components and Condition
o Locate and identify labels and tags
o Verify and record agent type, manufacturer, original manufacture date, size, serial number, and last hydro date
o Verify presence of safety pin and tamper seal
o Locate and read gauges
o Verify condition of cylinder and discharge hose
· Installation
o Understand rules governing proper extinguisher placement
o Verify correct maximum and minimum mounting height limits
o Confirm correct positioning of extinguisher labels
· Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance
o Perform routine visual inspections of cylinder and components
o Perform annual maintenance
o Determine whether an extinguisher is due for internal examination
o Determine whether an extinguisher is due for hydrostatic testing
o Perform proper steps and safety procedures to empty and disassemble an extinguisher
· Repair and Recharge
o Recharge fire extinguishers with appropriate agent
o Replace damaged mechanical components
o Recognize impairments/deficiencies
o Understand unique components of various extinguishers
· Work Management
o Prepare for work tasks
o Obtain permits
o Coordinate work activities
o Maintain proper documentation
Fire Alarm skills:
· Installation
o Mount and terminate peripherals (e.g., initiating and notification devices)
o Install cabling and associated infrastructure
o Comply with job site safety requirements
o Develop work plans based upon field conditions
o Install fire alarm infrastructures and components
o Perform system commissioning
· Maintenance
o Perform periodic testing of systems and devices
o Repair/replace impaired/deficient devices
o Clean devices
