Job Description
The primary duty of this position is to protect life and property by performing effective rescue and firefighting operations. The Fire Operations Technician will provide skilled maintenance and inspection of the department's apparatus, equipment and facilities. Performs related emergency scene duties, equipment and facility maintenance, and logistical support as assigned.
Duties/Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responds to emergency calls quickly, safely and with the proper protective equipment to provide fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials, and emergency medical assistance to the public.
- Maintains and operates fire department apparatus, equipment and facilities in a constant state of readiness for all divisions of the fire department.
- May be assigned to a primary schedule (24-hour) shift as a primary Firefighter or Driver/Operator
- May be assigned to a secondary schedule (40-hour week) as a 40-hour Technician.
- Either is assigned to or supplements duty crew shifts as needed.
- Ensures adherence to department policies, procedures and safety practices.
- Participates in training sessions to maintain and upgrade fire, rescue, and medical skills.
- Organizes, schedules and maintains accurate and complete records of all inspection and maintenance activities including those performed by the public works department and or outside vendors.
- Recommends policy and procedure changes to enhance apparatus and equipment performance.
- Assists with fleet management during annual testing of pumps, ladders and hose.
- Performs snow removal, housekeeping, and grounds maintenance at fire stations.
- Delivers supplies, equipment and mail to satellite fire stations.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Other Job Functions:
- Organizes, schedules, and performs periodic maintenance on fire apparatus, equipment and facilities including factory authorized work on self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
- Coordinates all inspection and maintenance activities performed by outside vendors
- Assists Firefighters with cleaning and maintenance of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Provides support to fire prevention activities such as set up and maintenance of displays.
Knowledge of:
- Principles, practices, policies and methods of fire suppression and firefighting.
- Current programs and practices concerning firefighter training and safety.
- Emergency medical services and hazardous materials response practices.
Ability to:
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Interpret instructions, use logic and make reasonable decisions regarding the safety of team members and his/ her own self.
- Perform strenuous activities or exert peak physical effort during emergency, training or investigation activities for prolonged periods under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat or cold and dense smoke.
- Establish positive working relationships with the public, City staff, fire personnel, and other agencies.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least one (1) year of firefighter experience.
- Minnesota State Firefighter II certifications.
- Minnesota State certified Emergency Medical Technician - Basic.
- Hazardous Materials Operations certified.
- Possess a valid MN driver's license.
Desired Qualifications
- Blue Card certified
- Two or more years of firefighter experience
- Fire Apparatus Operator certificate
- Minnesota State certified Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic
- Commercial Driver License

This position is a non-union position. A yearly cost of living adjustment (COLA) and market adjustments may be in addition to the listed salary step increases. Step increases may occur after six months or annually,

SELECTION PROCESS
ATTEND MANDATORY MEETING - February 9 AT 09:00 AM
All applicants must attend a meeting that will discuss the desired attributes of a Fire Technician for the Minnetonka Fire Department as well as the different steps of the process and how to best prepare.
Written Exam - Week of February 12This exam may take 2.5 to 3 hours to complete with a 3-hour time limit. This is a basic aptitude test. Please arrive early enough to check in and get seated. Those that receive a passing score will move forward to the next step in the process. Passing this exam is required to be considered for a Firefighter/Technician position.
PANEL INTERVIEW - Week of March 11
Applicants who successfully complete the written test will receive an invitation to attend an interview with an interview panel.
FINALISTS CHIEF'S INTERVIEW - Week of April 15
This interview will be with chief officers. During this interview, we will clarify anything needed about the candidates' experience and examine the observations made during observations of fire department activities.
FINALIST IDENTIFIED / CONDITIONAL OFFER - Beginning of May
The selected candidate who successfully passes both rounds of interviews and the panel presentation will receive a contingent offer. This offer will outline instructions and next steps. The final offer is contingent on the candidate successfully passing the pre-employment process.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT PROCESS - BACKGROUND CHECK, PHYSICAL EXAM WITH DRUG SCREEN, CERTIFICATION VALIDATION AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMINATION
Candidates will complete a background check, physical exam with drug screen and work simulation, psychological examination, and validation of any previous fire-related certifications and education.
