Description
Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to perform skilled work involving the maintenance and repair of gasoline or diesel driven engines and related auto equipment, machinery and tools. Employees in this classification specialize in Fire Emergency Vehicle Technician duties and holds Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certifications. Employees in this classification function at journeyman level to perform routine work with considerable independence. Position is responsible for developing preventive maintenance schedules and repairing all systems of Fire Department vehicles and equipment. The position may also be required to supervise mechanics and other assigned personnel as needed.

The following knowledge, skills, and abilities, as outlined herein, are intended to be representative of the type of tasks performed within this position. Schedules repairs, preventative maintenance and servicing of automotive equipment.
Performs primary mechanic work for Fire department pumpers, rescue vehicles, equipment and apparatus. Performs overhaul and repair work on automobiles, light and heavy trucks, mechanical equipment and other gasoline and diesel driven engines.
Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary parts.
Tunes and adjusts engines.
Repairs and welds automotive bodies.
Removes, repairs and replaces component parts or assembles automotive systems.
Services and repairs brake systems; tests and repairs electrical equipment, generators, distributors, magnetos and starters.
Repairs and replaces valves, pistons, main bearings, cooling, fuel and exhaust systems, transmissions, front and rear axles and hydraulic controls.
Maintains cleanliness of garage facilities and equipment.
Operates various standard and heavy equipment and tools utilized in auto-repair.
Attends In-house training and continuing education classes.
Performs related duties as directed.
Minimum Training and Experience
High school diploma, or equivalent; AND
Vocational/Technical training in Automotive Repair; AND
Four (4) years of previous experience that includes repairing fire vehicles, equipment and apparatus.
