Job Summary:
Under direction of the Fire Marshal, the Fire Protection Specialist is responsible for the analysis and enforcement of all applicable codes and ordinances and securing fire safety in various structures and installations; the promotion of fire safety in the City and the investigation of cause(s) and origin of fires.
Essential Functions:
- Reviews building plans to assure adequacy of exits, Fire Protection equipment, water supply and all specific requirements.
- Performs technical inspections of various occupancies to induce compliance with codes, ordinances, laws and regulations pertaining to the prevention and control of fires.
- Develops and presents public education programs for fire safety and prevention, company inspection and firefighter training programs, and other related programs as appropriate.
- Prepares or directs preparation of reports on specific research projects, as well as routine records and reports.
- Conducts investigations, gathers evidence and assists in preparation of cases for criminal prosecution in cases of suspected, violation of fire prevention laws and ordinances, and maintenance of hazardous conditions.
- Coordinates informational programs and plans between other agencies such as Building Division, Planning Division and utility companies.
- Reviews statistics regarding fire cause in relation to existing provisions of the Fire Code and recommends modification when required.
- Reviews results of Fire Protection programs and recommends program or procedural changes.
- Performs related work as required.
Local, state, and federal laws, ordinances and regulations regarding Fire Protection; mechanical, chemical and related characteristics of a variety of flammable, explosive and similar materials; building, electrical, plumbing and related codes and water supply systems.
Education and Experience Guidelines:
Qualifying for consideration in the selection process will be based on the description listed above under Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities, and a combination of the education and experience requirements described below.
Education and Experience:
Education:
- Related coursework in fire technology, fire science, building construction or closely related field is required.
- Additional experience in fire prevention and inspection may be substituted for the required coursework.
Experience:
Three years experience in fire prevention and inspection or building inspection is desirable.
Licenses:
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Class C California Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record is required.
Certifications:
California State Fire Training Fire Prevention 1A, 1B and 1C is desirable.
Special Requirements:
Must complete training in P.C. 832 within six months of hire date.
- Positions in this category are involved in active public safety duties, which involve the safeguarding of individuals, public and property. Incumbents are required to meet the required moderate physical exertion associated with the ability to, lift, carry, push, pull or climb.
- This position also requires extensive and repetitive physical activity involving the arms, wrists, and hands, including writing and using a keyboard. It also requires physical abilities associated with the ability to read, write and communicate in a work environment.
