What You Will Do
The position is in the Fire Protection (FP) Office, which provide Fire Protection and prevention services to minimize fire-related risks. The FP Office is the Laboratory's central Fire Protection Engineering and program support entity responsible for providing institutional technical direction and support for the Laboratory's nuclear and non-Nuclear Facilities and programs. There are four primary functional areas: Fire Protection Engineering, fire prevention inspection, fire alarm site-wide operations, and fire department program management.
Fire Protection is seeking a Nuclear Facility Engineer Manager (NFEM) Team Lead who is highly motivated and enthusiastic with strong problem-solving, communication, and team-building skills. The Nuclear Facility Engineering Manager 3 responsibilities include directing daily operation within an assigned program portfolio in the Fire Protection Office. The selected candidate will work closely with the Fire Protection Office, the Fire Marshal, Operations Managers and Triad leadership. The NFEM will be responsible to determine, plan, oversee and execute work scope in the areas of Lab-wide fire alarm system operations and maintenance; wildland fire risk reduction initiatives; performing facility Fire Protection and life safety system assessments; Fire Protection and life safety system commissioning, periodic testing and maintenance oversight; preparation of equivalencies and exemptions, development of equivalencies and exemptions to DOE Directives, building and NFPA codes; and technical reviews of proposed new activities for Fire Protection program adherence.

What You Need


Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Performs and overseas detailed technical reviews of Fire Protection design documents including, designs, plans, submittals, project specs and similar document and provides input back to the design team on behalf of the LANL AHJ.
  • Approves final design documents, submittals, and acceptance test plans and procedures on behalf of the LANL AHJ.
  • Witnesses the commissioning of new facility projects, significant facility modifications, and new or modified programmatic and research activities for Fire Protection and life safety compliance to requirements and project specs.
  • Review, provide feedback and approve contract documents consisting of drawings and specifications which define changes to buildings and infrastructure.
  • Effectively communicate compliance concerns both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and craft personnel on behalf of the AHJ.
  • Expert knowledge of Engineering principles and procedures, design guides, codes, and administrative practices. Including IBC, IFC, NFPA 101, NFPA standards and codes, FM global standards and others as applicable.
  • Expert knowledge of DOE, DOE-O-420.1C, DOE-STD-1066, LANL Engineering Standards Manual and others as applicable.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment as a member of a multi-discipline team of engineers and designers.
  • Expert knowledge of engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to conventional and non-conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems in order to properly evaluate proposed designs and related submittals.
  • Perform work in accordance with the Conduct of Engineering (CoE) and applicable Federal, State, and Laboratory codes and standards.
  • Represent the Authority Having Jurisdiction agency through interface and coordination with other engineering disciplines and the customer's representative during design and construction.
  • Compare equipment selections for compliance with the project specification and other requirements.
  • Expert knowledge of engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies in order to ensure proposed designs and commissioning activities meet the design specification and LANL requirements.
  • Expert knowledge of project and process engineering practices.
  • Mentor junior-level Fire Protection Engineers to perform the requirements described above.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. A professional license (PE) in an engineering discipline from a recognized licensing board preferred;
This position may be subject to DOE Order 426.2 Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. This DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the position can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
Desired Qualifications:

  • Active Q Clearance
  • Professional Engineering License
  • Familiarity with DOE and LANL Engineering Standards as they relate to Fire Protection is desired but not required for initial consideration.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) registration.
  • MS in Fire Protection Engineering.
  • Experience with Fire Protection and life safety aspects applicable to chemical processes, wet chemistry and laser laboratories, radiological laboratories, high-hazard, and Nuclear Facilities. Note: Nuclear/ radiological experience is desired but not required.

Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
