Position Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville invites applications for a FIRE-PLAN Research Coordinator to facilitate activities for a newly funded project titled Merging diverse knowledge systems to advance restoration of fire-dependent lands and cultures in the Great Lakes region. This project, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), aims to establish the necessary relationships and collaborations among Fire Ecologists, Fire Practitioners, and Indigenous Knowledge Practitioners to advance understanding of how Indigenous fire stewardship practices shaped historical Great Lakes landscapes and why fire restoration will be a key process for healing relationships among people, cultures, and land in ways that are necessary to promote the diverse, resilient, and just ecological and cultural landscapes of the future.

The Research Coordinator will join a dynamic and growing network of collaborators to help plan and conduct a series of listening sessions to be held at locations across the Upper Great Lakes Region during 2024 and 2025, synthesize the outcomes of these workshops to advance understanding of fire as an eco-cultural process, and to identify questions to pursue through future work that are relevant to the diverse network of stakeholders and participants engaged through this project.

This is a part-time, two-year long position with expectations that the hours committed per week will vary widely over the course of the position. Wage is $19.24 per hour.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate meetings among core project personnel.
  • Identify potential stakeholders and/or project participants.
  • Coordinate Listening Session logistics, including renting meeting space, setting up hotel room blocks, arranging transportation for field excursions, purchasing gifts for elders/participants, and coordinating paperwork to pay participant stipends and travel costs.
  • Track Listening Session participant lists.
  • Oversee communication for events and participant follow up including event evaluations and surveys.
  • Attend Listening Sessions.
  • Facilitate synthesis of feedback from Listening Sessions.
  • Develop and maintain web presence.
  • Assist with writing NSF Reports.
  • Assist with conducting experiments or interviews, collecting and analyzing data, and documenting results according to established protocols.
  • Assist in composing and organizing research reports and manuscripts to provide updates on unit objectives.
  • Schedule logistics and secure resources for research supplies, equipment, and facilities.
  • Track supply and equipment inventory levels and place replenishment orders.
  • Maintain organization of research records according to established policies and procedures.

What You'll Need to Succeed:

Required

  • Associate's degree
  • Experience working effectively with diverse audiences including resource managers, academics, and Indigenous communities
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills capable of building and maintaining strong relationships
  • Strong organizational and record keeping skills
  • Time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines
  • Familiar with Tribal communities
  • Ability to develop meeting related tasks and documents (agendas, minutes, outreach, etc.)
  • Ability to attend grant-funded activities in person

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Skills in conflict resolution and an interest in fire ecology, prescribed fire, and cultural burning practices are preferred.
  • Strong personal and professional connections to the Upper Great Lakes Region
