Under the supervision of the Captain/Fire Mechanic, makes major and minor repairs, maintains, and operates all Fire Department vehicles, apparatus, and equipment including, engines, transmissions, fire pumps, suspensions, tires and steering, braking, hydraulic, electrical, and heating and air conditioning systems, equipment, vans, trailers, and emergency service pick-up trucks. Maintains firefighting equipment by making repairs to aerial ladders, saws, nozzles, generators, and breathing air compressors. Orders/purchases parts and equipment necessary to perform needed repairs and maintenance. Maintains parts, and vehicle/equipment maintenance records. Performs preventative maintenance procedures on all Fire Department equipment. Completes installation of specialized equipment such as emergency lighting, two-way radios, KNOX key security systems, modems, GPS systems, computers, computer mounts, and decals. Modifies vehicle systems in order to enhance usability. Maintains on-call status and is subject to off-duty recall on a rotating schedule. May act as the Chief Fire Mechanic in his absence.
Responds to fire scene and repairs equipment at scene:
- Answers calls for and makes emergency repairs to fire apparatus and equipment in the field.
- Road tests fire apparatus, perform mandated inspections and keeps work records.
- Instructs fire fighters specialists and other employees in the inspection and maintenance of firefighting apparatus and equipment.
- Drives vehicle from one location to another as needed.
Perform complex repairs:
- Repairs a variety of vehicles and apparatus, including engines, transmissions, fire pumps, suspensions, tires and steering, braking, hydraulic, electrical and heating and air conditioning systems.
- Conduct preventative maintenance inspections of light vehicles and apparatus used by the Fire Department.
- Diagnose vehicle and equipment issues and select the most efficient method for completing repairs. Ensure upon completion of repairs that vehicles and apparatus are safe for use.
- Must be proficient with OEM software to troubleshoot problems with fire apparatus.
Order and purchase parts:
- Order supplies from vendors and manufacturers. Stock parts and organize storage area.
- Maintain records and conduct inventory for parts and supplies.
- Collect and maintain records of vehicle preventative maintenance, equipment installations.
- Perform job costing under the direction of the Captain / Fire Mechanic.
- Maintain equipment in the repair shop.
- Clean shop floors, workbenches and dispose of waste oil at tank.
- Complete installation of specialized equipment such as emergency lighting, two-way radios, KNOX key security systems, modems, GPS systems, computers, computer mounts, and decals.
- Modify vehicle systems in order to enhance usability.
Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma. Two years of heavy truck repair to include one year experience with Fire equipment or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge skills and abilities. Per Sedgwick County Policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid Class B CDL US driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance. Class B CDL must be obtained within 90 days. Must successfully complete at least two EVT Level II exam’s annually, completing the Fire Apparatus Technician EVT Level II certification within 36 months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications: Four years of heavy truck repair to include one year of experience with Fire equipment or centrifugal pump system. Completion of any courses below:
ASE certification – T2, T3, T4, T5 or T6, EVT successful exam of: F1, F2, F3 or F4
