Basic Function and Distinguishing Characteristics
Under the direction of an assigned Fire Captain, performs responsible duties in the suppression of fires; performs firefighter engineer and driver/operator duties as assigned; maintains fire department equipment, apparatuses and facilities; provides emergency medical care for sick and injured individuals.
Fire Engineer is the advanced level classification in the series and is distinguished from the Firefighter I by performing more technical equipment operation, providing training, guidance and work direction to assigned personnel, and works with greater independence with which an incumbent is expected to operate. Firefighter I is the entry level of the fire suppression series. Incumbents perform routine fire suppression duties at an assigned facility while learning to perform the full range of fire suppression activities.
Education and Experience/ Licenses and Other Requirements
High School Diploma or GED; sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above; any combination equivalent to one (1) year of experience at the level of a Firefighter I.
Valid California Class C Driver's License with all the proper firefighter endorsements. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate issued by an EMS authority agency and/or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician certification.
Supplemental Information
A valid driver's license may be required at the time of appointment and employees may also be required to drive their own vehicle and provide proof of liability insurance as per Vehicle Code VC § 160020. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
This position may require pre-employment drug test, physical examination, and fingerprinting for a background investigation.
