THIS IS AN INTERNAL ONLY JOB POSTING. ONLY CURRENT CITY OF NEWPORT FIRE DEPARTMENT STAFF WILL BE CONSIDERED AT THIS TIME.


Provide emergency response and rescue services to the City of Newport. Ensure equipment readiness and maintenance. Operate and drive fire apparatus.

MINIMUM/MANDATORY EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties as described. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be: A high school equivalency plus related coursework AND eighteen months of related experience.

KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of fire fighting apparatus, equipment, principals and practices. Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws related to occupation. Knowledge of hazardous materials, fire, field medical treatment, rescue methods and techniques, use and safety precautions related to fire equipment.

SKILLS: Skill in the use of personal computers, various software programs, standard office equipment, and firefighting equipment. Customer service orientation and skills. Exceptional interpersonal skills, and strong oral and written communications skills with a variety of audiences. Competence in business English, spelling, and punctuation. Strong reasoning, and problem-solving skills, combined with excellent judgment and professionalism.

ABILITIES: Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with city management, employees, Council members, other entities, and the general public. Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively; to recognize actual and potential danger; and determine the proper course of action considering established department SOP's and SOG's Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals and groups regarding complex or sensitive issues. Ability to elicit information and cooperation from individuals and groups. Ability to maintain the confidentiality required of this position. Ability to work extended hours, when required. Ability to effectively function in an intense work environment with conflicting demands. Physical ability to perform the essential job functions.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/LICENSES AT TIME OF HIRE:

Valid Oregon Driver's License at time of hire

Firefighter I and Firefighter II Certification

EMT-B certification

NFPA Driver certification

Pump Operator certification

NFPA mobile water supply operator, aerial apparatus operator

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Associate's degree in fire science. Certifications: Fire Inspector, Fire Instructor, Basic Fire Investigation, EMT I or Paramedic.

Performs duties based on 24 hour or other shift requirements. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility including the ability to frequently lift or move materials up to twenty-five pounds and rarely lift or move materials more than 100 pounds. The position requires the ability to operate a motorized vehicle. Manual dexterity and coordination are required approximately 90% of the work period to operate equipment such as computers, keyboards, telephones, standard office equipment, and standard fire equipment. Physical exertion may be required to climb stairs, ladders, and over walls, run, move heavy objects, crawl through tight spaces, and kneel in confined areas.

WORKING CONDITIONS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work locations in all types of indoor and outdoor environments. Activity may require exposure to extremely hazardous situations in order to protect people and property. When in the field, may be exposed to a variety of environmental conditions and to varying and extreme weather conditions. When responding to emergencies, employees risk physical hazard from smoke, heat, fire, noise, chemicals, bodily secretions, sharp objects, traffic, drugs, and drug paraphernalia. Involves contact with individuals under the influence of drugs/alcohol or who have communicable diseases. Subject to 24 hour call back for emergencies.
