Job description

Under the supervision of the Fire Chief, the Fire Captain (FC) performs fire prevention and suppression activities throughout the institution and promotes acceptable attitudes and behavior of inmates under their supervision.

This position is limited term for up to 12 months; it may be extended to 24 months or become permanent.
Please note: The salary range listed does not include the 3.0% General Salary Increase effective July 1, 2023.
Employees who are employed at Pelican Bay State Prison for 12 consecutive qualifying pay periods will receive a $2600 per year annual recruitment and retention bonus.

Pelican Bay State Prison is located in Crescent City. Situated in the northwest corner of California along the Pacific coast, this thriving community is famous for some of the world's most beautiful coastline. Cool ocean mists nurture the giant Redwoods in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. The crystal clear Smith River is one of California's largest wild river systems. The majestic Redwood forests, local beaches, river rafting, miles of hiking and wonderful places to fish are all easily accessible. Youth engagement is encouraged through events and organizations such as the county fair and 4-H. Del Norte County is uncrowded and unspoiled.
Special Requirements

Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. If you are meeting Minimum Qualifications with education, you must include your unofficial transcripts/diploma for verification. Official transcripts may be required upon appointment. If it is determined an applicant does not meet the Minimum Qualifications, the candidate will be withheld from the eligibility list, rendering them inactive and ineligible to be hired for the position. Candidates who have been withheld may file an appeal with the State Personnel Board.
Candidates new to CDCR or the Division of Juvenile Justice are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting, and Tuberculosis testing prior to appointment followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.
Pursuant to the Public Health Orders (Guidance for the Use of Face Coverings and State and Local Correctional Facilities and Detention Centers Health Care Worker Vaccination Requirement) issued by the California Department of Public Health and the directive Mandatory COVID-19 Vaccines and Testing for Institution Staff issued by the Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation (CDCR), all staff assigned to this post/position may be required to show evidence of full vaccination and booster for COVID-19, absent an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation precluding them from vaccination.

PBSP is looking for Fire Captain candidates with the following desirable qualifications:
- CA State Fire Marshall Firefighter 1 Certification
- CA EMT Certification
- CA Class A or B Commercial license or the RSTR 50 Firefighter Endorsement
