Summary of Position: The Fire Assayer position is responsible for conducting all procedures related to fire assay and cupellation, including sweeps and corrected fire assay, ensuring results are accurate and precise. Performs developmental work under the instruction of the Laboratory Supervisor to perfect and troubleshoot assay procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Able to assay all bullion samples received using approved methods and prioritizes assays according to settlement date.
- Run routine analyses on the XRF and weigh up samples for the cupellation process as required.
- Works in conjunction with laboratory technicians to ensure repeatable, accurate results.
- In training to analyze all sweeps samples received using approved methods.
- Recognizes and works with Fire Assayer III for improvement and/or development of fire assay procedures and fluxes for non-routine samples received.
- In training with Fire Assayer II and III to maintain records and methods in all areas of fire assay.
- Maintains all equipment utilized for the fire assay samples.
- Runs routine analyses on the XRF as required.
- In training under the Fire Assayer III and lab management to master the LabWare system and is expected to assist other Laboratory employees in understanding and utilizing these tools.
- Performs PM and troubleshoots furnaces.
- Ensures hazardous waste is stored in accordance to State & Federal regulations. Report any problems to the Lab Supervisor and EH&S Manager.
- Maintain inventory of all Fire Assay supplies through notification of lab management or plant procurement staff to ensure stock levels do not run out.
- Housekeeping to be done on a daily basis in work area, wipe down balances, hoods and countertops as needed per day, with emphasis on hood cleaning (OSHA regulation).

Education/Experience:
- Excellent time management skills; able to prioritize work.
- Shows productivity, efficiency, and engagement while at work.
- The candidate should have a minimum of one year in Fire Assay laboratory training/experience.
- Basic working knowledge of Microsoft Programs, i.e. Word and Excel.
