Position Details

Standard Schedule:

7:00 am until 3:30 pm
Monday - Friday

Mandatory overtime is dictated by production demands, therefore daily and/or weekly (weekend) overtime is required as needed

Overview:

In a fast-paced demanding production environment, this position is an integral part of the finishing process. The high energy Finishing Machine Operator must be self-motivated with a strong attention to detail and understanding of the Finishing Machine and process to ensure the interminable and efficient running of a smooth workflow to minimize downtime for optimum production volume and quality.
The primary daily duties of this role will include, but not limited to, monitoring, operating, and maintaining daily working condition of Finishing Machine which includes preventive maintenance and thorough, daily, extensive equipment cleaning. Being a team player is essential since all tasks require close collaboration with co-workers to ensure product is finished on schedule and within the quality specifications.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reviews, understands, and follows daily production schedule from Team Lead to optimize order flow for the shift
  • Preforms daily Finishing Machine paint system startup and shutdown requirements, follows all defined SOP's safely to start and maintain production cycle efficiently; ensures output of machine meets high-quality standards consistent with goals for quality and on-time order performance; inspects system related safety devices for proper function prior to startup of the system
  • Controls and adjusts machine settings (start and stop operation of machine) as needed by using levers and/or buttons; turns dials, hand wheels, valves, switches to regulate items such as conveyor speeds, flow rates, viscosity, machine temps, air pressure and circulation
  • Determines paint flow, viscosity, and coating quality by performing visual inspections or by using viscometer; adjusts spray guns and flows to gain proper width and pressure to ensure proper millage is applied
  • Regularly monitors process parameters by observing machine gauges and equipment operation by checking output to detect defects or deviations from standards by closely monitoring and inspecting product quality
  • Record and maintains activity logs of changes made to the process settings during operation (i.e. defective units flow rates, pressures, spray pattern etc.)
  • Inspects chemicals, coatings, or paints with precision and measuring tools before adding to machine
  • Perform system color change by making necessary adjustments as needed; cleans areas between color change
  • Minimize waste of raw materials as well as working in a clean and tidy manner
  • Performs daily preventative maintenance and cleaning of maintenance on spray guns, conveyor, and booth area
  • Conducts other routine preventative maintenance on finishing equipment at the established frequency; follows all defined SOP's; drives continuous improvement
  • Troubleshoots and drives timely corrective action for any system or product related defects, failures, or mechanical difficulties; ensures effective communication by reporting all issues experienced as well as corrective actions taken to Lead and/or Supervisor immediately (i.e. product quality defects, machine breakdowns / faults, etc.)
  • Tracks work order trends and downtime reduction improvements with finishing equipment; reacts to abnormalities / trends by performing detailed problem solving, defining root cause; adjusts the process as needed in order to return to normal standard operating conditions by making immediate recommendations for refurbishment or repair based on factors (i.e. poor quality, material consumption, etc.)
  • Follow 6S process: Safety, Sort, Set, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain by participating in daily housekeeping activities indicative of a safe and well organized work environment (i.e. disassembling, cleaning, and reassembling sprayers, vessels, lines, and other equipment used in the process; uses solvents, wire brushes, other cleaning aids, and cloths for daily cleaning duties)
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to other peers and operators
  • Facilitate effective "handoff" of the machine to peer at shift change
  • Job rotation and relief of other team members
  • Adheres to strict health and safety guidelines, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) and Company policies
  • Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent mechanical aptitude required to operate machinery to gain comprehensive working
  • knowledge of finishing equipment and application
  • Knowledge of entire Finishing Process with ability to determine paint flow, viscosity, and coating quality by performing visual inspection
  • Demonstrated experience to safely perform daily routine equipment cleaning and maintenance functions
  • Ability to perform well under pressure while multitasking in a fast paced, but organized manner, with strong attention to detail to ensure task is completed efficiently, to the correct standard, and in the necessary time frame
  • Can analyze situations and find solutions with strong attention to detail
  • Physical stamina and strength with ability to walk and stand continuously throughout the shift
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with ability to work and communicate well with others
  • Safety and OSHA training required (will train)
  • Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be atleast 18 years of age
  • Punctual and regular attendance required with ability to work long hours, mandatory overtime is dictated by production demands, therefore daily and/or weekly (weekend) overtime is required as needed
  • Technical degree or a formal Apprenticeship is highly desirable
  • Previous Machine Operator experience in a manufacturing environment with experience monitoring quality of finished goods in a repetitive manner in high volumes is preferred
  • Candidate must pass pre-employment background check and drug screen

Specific vision abilities required by this job include color vision to distinguish between colors and variations, close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups employees of organization. Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
