What You Will Do
This Financial Systems Analyst student position is part of the Los Alamos National Laboratory Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) Program which is a year-round educational program that provides students with relevant professional experience while pursuing a graduate degree. This CNTL-SYS student position provides an opportunity to participate in our master's in business administration, (MBA) program. The program pairs up the student with a mentor and Subject Matter Experts to enhance their work experience. The purpose of the program is to provide the student with real life work experience and training supporting the Laboratory's Business Systems and processes within the Finance and Accounting organizations.
The MBA program is designed for working professionals wanting to continue their education without compromising work experience and career growth opportunities. The program, offered through New Mexico State University, allows individuals to obtain their MBA in 24 months online while securing an opportunity to pursue a full-time position at Los Alamos National Laboratory with all tuition and fees covered. Upon graduation students may be placed in a position within the CNTL-SYS organization with an emphasis on supporting Laboratory Business Systems.
The CNTL Systems (CNTL-SYS) Group is responsible for:
  • Integrating and supporting business processes and systems across the CNTL Division and Laboratory.
  • Initiating and championing financial system improvements.
  • Partnering with programs and technical divisions to strengthen our business capabilities.
  • Building alliances with Controller and Finance Division and internal and external technical customers.
  • Troubleshooting and helping resolve financial system production problems.
  • Providing project leadership and membership on financial systems projects.
  • Designing and developing financial reports.
  • Support internal and external audit requests.
  • Utilizing multiple financial applications, including MS Excel, to conduct research and analysis.
  • Creating and maintaining software applications using various software tools.
  • Providing stewardship of Laboratory, NNSA and sponsor resources.
  • Maintain a safe and secure working environment.
  • Work as a team member with direction from your mentor.


What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Provide documentation of acceptance into a graduate program in a business-related field in Accounting, Finance, or Information Systems.
  • Enroll in and successfully complete a minimum of 6 graduate credit hours per semester (or the equivalent of full-time enrollment).
  • All students MUST remain enrolled at their university while working at the Lab during the academic year.
  • Have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 on 4.0 scale.
  • Must earn a B or better in all coursework.
  • If regular, full-time employment is offered, there is a two-year work commitment after completion of the MBA program. If the employee is unable to meet the additional two-year requirement, the full amount of tuition and book costs must be reimbursed to the laboratory.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using basic computer tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook for business communications. Candidates will be required to demonstrate basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Pass a new employment drug test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE "Q" clearance which typically requires US Citizenship.
  • Reliable internet is required for teleworking.

Education/Experience: Completion of a Baccalaureate Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or Management Information Systems.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience and/or Education in a Business-related field in Accounting, Finance, or Management Information Systems.
  • Work or education experience with data or system analysis in support of business systems and processes.
  • Work or education experience with researching and solving problems related to business processes and systems.
  • Work or education experience using Microsoft Excel, Teams, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word to increase productivity, communicate, and organize work.
  • Experience collaborating with a team to solve complex problems.
  • Interest in pursuing a career in Financial Systems Analysis in support of a world class research National Laboratory.

Features of the Controllers/Finance Division Masters in Business Administration (MBA) program:
  • Tuition and Fees are fully covered.
  • Candidates must cover required pre-requisite courses and GMAT fees.

Location: This position will be in Los Alamos, NM with the potential for teleworking from a location within 2 hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite will be periodically required. Telework is at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
