POSITION PURPOSE:
The Financial Counselor's role primarily revolves around insurance verification and assisting patients and their families with financial and payment issues. The Financial Counselor performs an important role in protecting the hospital's cash flow. This position is unique in that the Financial Counselor has the opportunity to follow the patient through the entire Revenue Cycle, from scheduling, to discharge, to final financial activity. The Financial Counselor may be the first and last contact the facility has with our patients, thus excellent customer service skills are a must.

What you will do:
  • Assist in receiving patient data essential for completing the admission process. Responsible for assisting with switchboard operations.
  • Executes a comprehensive review of all cases meeting criteria, coordinates and performs patient interviews to define needs, develops and implements a strategy to enable the patient to meet their financial obligation.
  • Advocates for patients and family members and acts as a liaison with insurance companies.
  • Submits claims to insurance companies. Works claims after they have been generated to make sure they pass all edits for successful transmission to payer. Follow up with insurance companies for prompt payment of claims. Resolve any billing issues preventing claims from being paid.
  • Develops accurate point of service collections communication and facilitates the collection of these payments.
  • Maintains current knowledge of rules and regulations of industry and government programs, hospital financial and billing policies, and educates patients, families, and team members as necessary.
  • Submits prior authorizations.
  • Prepares and maintains billing for accounts with a self-pay balance. Review of self-pay delinquent accounts and coordinates activities to collect on these accounts.
  • Release of Information to various requesters(i.e. patient, insurance companies, transition of care) following HIPAA and internal policy and procedures.
  • Scan documents to the medical record in appropriate place in a timely manner.
  • Submits refunds as needed.
  • Posts payments to patient accounts, both from insurance and patients.
  • Other duties as assigned.Provide high level customer service across service lines utilizing the nursing process.

What we are looking for:
  • CRCS(Certified Revenue Cycle Specialist) through AAHAM or RHIT Certification through AHIMA preferred.
  • Associate degree with a business, accounting, or healthcare emphasis preferred.
  • Knowledge of the healthcare revenue cycle preferred.
  • 1-2 Years' experience in insurance, collections, or accounts receivable required.
  • Strong business communication skills with ability to promote professional image.
  • Understanding of insurance benefits with the ability to calculate coinsurance, copay, and/or deductibles.
