Job Description and Duties:Join the mission-driven team at the A Government Entity as we safeguard California's health and environment. In this role you'll play a crucial part in ensuring compliance with the legal requirements and supporting our efforts to restore contaminated lands. As an Attorney III you will have the opportunity to:
- Provide legal support on legal matters related to the Department's various fees, including Activity Fees, Generator and Disposal Fees, the Environmental Fees, EPA Identification Verification Fees, Facility Fees, and Manifest User and Correction Fees
- Advise Department management and staff on statutory and regulatory requirements governing hazardous waste management and collection of fees
- Research and prepare memoranda on interpretation and implementation of statutes and regulations enforced or administered by the Department
- Represent the Department in fee appeals
- Prepare legal briefs and/or works with California Department Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) attorneys to prepare joint legal briefs on fee appeal matters
- Experience in civil litigation in areas such as hazardous waste, civil rights, CEQA, pollution cleanup and recovery, and business matters such as bankruptcy and contracts
- Experience with the CERCLA, HSAA, RCRA, NEPA, and CEQA, and California Procedure Acts (APA) is a plus
- Research and writing abilities, as well as skill in oral advocacy and negotiations, experience leading complex, often technical, and scientific policy developments
- Ability and experience in complex litigation, developing regulation packages, managing workloads, and managing stakeholders
- Motivated to work on environmental matters, organized and detail oriented with the ability to work under tight deadlines and pressure
- Positive attitude, is a team player, has an excellent work ethic, and is willing and able to take direction
- Ability to work well with a variety of personalities is crucial
- Interpersonal communication skills and the ability to provide competent and reliable service as in-house counsel
- Professionalism in high-stress situations, and the ability to foster and maintain good relations with clients

A hybrid telework or office centered schedule may be available for this position, it is up to the candidate.
