The City of Gig Harbor is seeking a Finance Technician to support the city in the finance department. The ideal candidate will have general experience in accounting, recordkeeping, cashiering, is excited to learn new things, wants to be a part of an inclusive team, knows how to collaborate well with team and other departments, share ideas, has excellent communication and listening skills, and a positive attitude. SUMMARY
This position is responsible for accounting and clerical work performed within the finance department. This job classification may be responsible for cashiering, accounts payable, and/or local improvement district records, and other accounting, clerical, and record-keeping functions within finance. The workload is divided among the individuals filling this job classification based on the needs of the city, to include consideration of coverage, division of duties and overall experience. The Finance Technician is expected to become proficient at all duties.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Processes accounts payable.
- Collects vouchers, assists with coding of expenditures, reviews for accuracy and proper approval.
- Performs data entry, processes checks, and prints reports.
- Maintains all vendor information and documentation for all processed claims.
- Maintains records and processes billings for the various local improvement districts.
- Receives, records, and performs data entry of cash receipts; performs financial calculations and reconciles and reports discrepancies found in records; matches invoicing.
- Prepares and enters general ledger adjusting journal entries.
- Compiles budget data and documents.
- Compiles statistical, financial, accounting, or auditing reports and tables pertaining to cash receipts, expenditures, accounts payable, and profits and losses.
- Maintains records of bank account balances and transactions and records and reconciles all deposits and all checks issued and balances cash each day.
- Provides general support to the finance director and senior accountant on the day-to-day operation of cash and investment management.
- Assists with fixed asset inventories, adjustments, and record keeping.
- Transcribes and types letters, memorandums, reports, tabulations, and other materials.
- Sorts and files correspondence, checks, vouchers, index cards, and other materials, numerically, alphabetically, or by other prescribed methods.
- Responsible for the maintenance and retention of financial records and files.
- Transcribes information from application forms and temporary records to permits and permanent records and files.
- Makes simple arithmetic calculations; gathers data from requisitions, statistical reports, time reports, and other records.
- May greet visitors to the civic center; provide routine information and directions; and notify staff of visitor arrival.
- Assists the public by checking routine records and files for requested information.
- May support in leading part-time, temporary, or intern personnel within the division.
- Maintains punctual and reliable attendance.

Sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time. Performs close computer work with repetitive motion for long periods of time; talk, listen, and hear. Required to stand, walk, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Occasionally they may be required to kneel, reach, bend, crouch, twist, squat, and lift up to five pounds.
QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of education, training and experience that indicates the individual can successfully perform the job may be considered.
- High school or GED equivalent.
- Two (2) years of accounting, bookkeeping, data entry, or closely related experience.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Knowledge of accounting and bookkeeping principles and practices, or graduation from an accredited business training program with an emphasis in accounting preferred.
The following certifications and licenses are required for the position (or must be obtained within the timeframe stated) and must be maintained for the duration of employment.
- A valid Washington State driver's license (or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire).
- A history of and ability to maintain safe and responsible driving that meets the city's motor vehicle record minimum driving requirements.
- Ability to pass position relevant pre-employment screening.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
At the City of Gig Harbor, our aim is to extend salary offers that fall within the range from the minimum to the midpoint. These offers will be determined by assessing the applicant's relevant experience in alignment with the requirements of the applied position at the city, alongside a comprehensive evaluation of pay rates for our existing employees engaged in comparable roles. It's important to note that our salary ranges are currently under review and may be subject to adjustment.
- This position is classified as eligible for overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
- This position is covered under a collective bargaining agreement with Teamsters 117.
